Radiator/Fan Question: Push or Pull????

so which would provide better cooling, push or pull (see diagrams below)? would one be significantly better than the other, or would it be within 1-2C?

Setup:
TDX
D5
NV-78
PA120.2
x2 120mm 45CFM fans
NO SHROUD

PUSH

PULL

my rad is in the same spot right now. I have it pull, but im pulling from the outside, not inside the case.

from top of case down, basically its rad, then fans, and there pulling from the outside air inside the case. second pic but just flipped. I think i heard this was the better way.

number 2 works better for me, but i would try both of them because i've here the thermochills like push, while the black ice's like pull

ive always thought pull was better, but theres a couple people here and on xtremesystems that believe push is like 2-3% better.

Pull is slightly better, not significant but noticeable. I did both since I had extra silent panaflos around. I have a dual 120 rad with 4 fans, two stronger ones on pull and the weaker ones on push. Noise level is just a little more than just 2 pull but the temp drop was like 3 degree less but it takes a lot for this system to warm the rad up.

On PA Series rads, PUSH was found to outperform PULL by around 2%.

I vote for push since it looks like the fans are using air from inside the case... The temps in the case are going to be higher than outside... Therefore you would want more velocity running across the radiator...

+1 for push... but I would also try doing both push and pull at the same time with 4 of the same fans.

Where these tests done with or without shrouds?

Both. Rad with no shrouds in pull = 100%

Rad with push = 102%
Rad with shrouds in pull = 102%
Rad with shrouds in push = 104%

All fractions of degrees difference to your final temps. As we've stated since release of PA series, shrouds are pointless on these rads unless it's to reduce noise, but that shouldn't be required due to low density....

Actually shrouds are elementery to creating vacuum and the distance from the fan to the shroud is fundamental in developing that vacuum.

Run that same test and on a pull system use a 1/4 " spacer at the 4 screws only and I believe the results will be a bit differant.

This is a question only to give you pause for thought. What if your case wasn't in balance
and it had negitive air flow.

so Cathar and Marci say PUSH, while alot of other people say PULL. i would test both setups, but i need to know which is better so i can cut/mod my top panel accordingly (blowholes for pull, open rectangle for push).

hey Marci, can you link me to the article where Cathar tested PUSH/PULL on the PA series?

Would you like some links to air jet heat exchangers. Same princples used in Storm water blocks 50 year old tech

I prefear both suck and blow.. but thats jsut me...

You will find, it dosnt matter either way...

i dont see how this is relevant to my question. where does air jet heat exchangers and the Storm waterblock relate to my questions??? Thermochill's site doesnt really answer the question, if thats what you mean.

Thermochill rads already have 1/4" shroud built into rad, hence minimal effects of further shrouding. The additional shroud adds a further 40mm depth to this figure.

All part of the testing that's been delayed by Australian summer... and Cathar's purchase of an R1. Figures quoted were stated in threads on XS as hints towards testing's outcome once the time comes that it can be completed properly.

Why don't you link to Manufactors of heat exchangers and get the real facts.

After you but please ensure that the heat exchangers in question have been specifically designed for use with 120mm fans in the cfm / static pressure ranges of which the average user is actually putting into practice in our particular application... accounting for back pressure once mounted in case... and all the other variables that come into effect once mounted in a PC Chassis... and that the information presented was obtained using such hardware... otherwise it's pointless to anyone here for comparative purposes.

If you wanna debate thermodynamics you need to be over at procooling.com - I'm no engineer and don't profess to be.

it looks like ill be using PUSH, but one last question:

would PUSH/PULL produce the same noise, or would 1 be louder than the other? ill be using x2 120mm Yate Loon, ~45 CFM, 1350RPM.

Marci, do you think push would be louder than pull, or would the difference be so small that io couldnt tell?

Yes I no what thermochill has done with shroud. I was referring to the fans relationship to the shroud. A 1/4 " spacer between the FAN and shroud at the 4 fan screws only should create more negitive air.
