A few months ago - in May to be precise, I made the acquisition of a Sapphire Radeon X1800 XT 256 MB.

After installing the card and the drivers (I think it was version 6.5), I noticed that the card's temperatures were a bit too high : in fact, the GPU was at 65C idle/85C full charge.
But after restarting the PC everything became normal : 48C idle/65 charge.

The card worked fine until I updated my drivers today. I went from version 6.5 (or 6.6?) to version 6.9 ... then played FEAR for 5 minutes, and guess what happened? I received a warning that the GPU had reached 90 degrees!

After that I tried restarting my PC, cleaning drivers, reinstalling older versions and so on ... and as I'm writing to you, the GPU is still at 67C!!!!! If I run a game, it will jump up to 90.

This makes absolutely no sense!

Did this ever happen to any of you?

I have no idea what to do to fix this problem.

That's actually close to normal for the x1800xt. Mine hovers around 84C while playing games. You might try using a program like ATI Tray Tools to manually set your temperature/fan thresholds.

yeah but don't you think there's a problem if the card was running at 50 degrees idle for 4 months, and now all of a sudden it went up to 66?

besides, I'm using a VF900 on the card

Change your fan speeds they may have been reset or changed to lower values.

Edit: Nvm didn't see that you weren't using stock cooler.

How long has that card been in your PC

4-6 months

I had a similar problem with another saphire card, the x850xtpe to be exact

Try getting a can of compressed air, and blowing the Sh7T outta that guy both from the case side in, and internall out.

My big problem ended up just being dust build up

Could be dust build up in the cooler reducing airflow and cooling.
Could be a stuffy case whose fans no longer support enough airflow.
Cold be thermal paste drying up and no longer making sufficient contact with the GPU core (more rare but possible).
The X1800 can operate Normally up to 90 degrees, but I wouldn't risk it.
Also the stock cooler sucks (noise and cooling), I wold suggest VF900CU, it brought my idle temps down to 45-49 and full load after hours is 66.
