"Our friends at HKEPC has gotten themselves a R520 card and it will probably be officially known as Radeon X1800 when launch in early October. Interestingly, there are 16, 24 and 32 pipes versions but there are only 10 pieces of the 32 pipes versions exist currently. The core clock of the card is 650Mhz+ and memory at 1400Mhz. The R520 card uses 1.26ns GDDR3 memories. The 32 pipes R520 performance will exceed the GeForce 7800GTX."

Something just doesn't look right with that picture... can't put my finger on it though.

I'd say anyone posting 'specs' of the new R520 is just guessing right now.

thats GDDR3 800MHz, 1600 Effective....

to add a real peice of news:

In a bid to fight back the market of high-performance graphics cards from NVIDIA Corp. as well as to solidify positions in the mainstream, ATI Technologies reportedly plans to introduce two more graphics chips that feature the next-generation architecture from the company. One of the newcomers even said to be produced at United Microelectronics Corp.’s foundry.

ATI has reportedly notified its clients that it would begin supplies of its much-anticipated visual processing units (VPUs) code-named R520, RV530, RV515 and RV505 by the end of the third quarter, DigiTimes web-site reports. Additionally, ATI is claimed to have started designing code-named R516 VPU for “entry-level graphics card market”, the report that cites sources among graphics cards makers claims.

Neither RV505, nor R516 have ever been mentioned before. It is highly likely that the RV505 is a substitute for entry-level RADEON X300-class products, but it is unclear where the code-named R516 is targeted. Furthermore, ATI typically calls its products aimed at mainstream, entry-level or value markets with RV-series code-names, whereas products for performance-mainstream and higher market segments are named with R-series code-names.

If the report is correct, UMC will be the first R5-series graphics chip from ATI to be produced at UMC, not TSMC, ATI’s primary foundry partner, which makes ATI’s R5 family of VPUs using 90nm process technology with low-k dielectrics.

UMC has already initiated commercial product using 90nm process technology. UMC’s 90nm production is taking place at both of its 300mm fabs and one 200mm fab, with over 20 different products now being manufactured. The majority of the products being manufactured take advantage of UMC’s low-k dielectrics, according to the company. In addition to UMC’s standard 90nm device offering, customers are also utilizing either the company’s 90nm low-power or high-speed device options, depending upon their product application.

Previously ATI used UMC’s manufacturing capacities for making entry-level and low-power products.

ATI code-named R5-series of VPUs is projected to support Shader Model 3.0 and other innovations, which requires totally new graphics architecture from ATI. Among other improvements the flagship R520 product is expected to have over predecessors is a new memory controller. Neither brand-name of the new breed of VPUs, nor their launch schedule have been confirmed.

Representatives for ATI Technologies usually do not comment on unannounced products.

And they're saying ATI found a way to impliment MSAA into HDR at almost lossless performance.

Does anyone know how large that coin is? Just from previous experience with ATi cards and the chip wafers, I'm guessing about the size of a US quarter, but would like to hear from some one that knows for sure.

I would say you're so bitte right now that somebody could put the board in your lap and run benchmarks and you would still be skeptical. HKEPC has always tended to get hardware before ANYBODY. If they say they got it...they got it. Remember that they got an unlockable 7800GT....

It's faked, if you zoom in on the image, you'll see the black mask with the R520 and all on it doesn't line up with the core itself. Zoom in and you'll see this (really evident in the right top corner).

So it's a fake!

Rage3D thinks so as well http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33827703

So looks like some more false information, it's just disappointing that it's not Inquirer that's posting this fake info.

Doubtful , but you have a link I presume?

Since the die image has been proven to be fake, what's the likely hood that this is as well? Hmmm Shifra?

r520closeup3pu.jpg

Notice the angle of the die. Then, notice the angle of the text; specifically, notice that the text has no angle, because the kid who Photoshopped it apparently doesn't know that you can perspective-distort text in Photoshop.

Then, notice that the die is curiously a completely flat black, as though silicon has no flash-reflective properties whatsoever.

Then, notice that, despite the fact that the digicam they were using apparently can't capture the transistors surrounding the core without compression artifacts, it can capture the ultra-fine detail of "R520," which is just as small, with nearly no compression artifacts to speak of. Weird.

It's fake.

um...ok. Don't take very many close-ups of hardware that often do you? ;)

photoshop always leaves a hex mark on the picture.. check it in a hex editor and see what it says: http://www.codeproject.com/bitmap/iptc.asp

Why stare at a picture wondering if it is fake when you can just look at it with a hex editor and see instantly what it was made with.

'cause you'd already know this ^^^ if ya did.

Lossless compared to what - HDR with no AA - you've got to be kidding.....

Some people like Finalgt are doubters, until they are holding it they will not believe anything.
Thats fine, because it's not fake!
My best friend works at the ATI HQ in Markham Ontario and he has held a production run card in his hands!

It's real Period!

Shit, some of you people could stare at your dicks and after a while find that its fake, even though its been there all your life! Stop trying to find fault where there is none.

Whenever ATI does launch a new friggin card they better name it "Bigfoot"

cause all these threads really remind me of a bigfoot sighting.

I don't see anyone saying that the R520 isn't real (other then you  ). Evidently you don't understand that that pic currently floating around isn't real.

Well shit, with a source like that, how could I doubt you? Sorry for disbelieving, man.

He needs to post pics of this supposed "friend" holding a card we already know exists or he needs to STFU. ;)

LOL

(I love threads like these, all my sarcastic comments at the expense of n00bs really get my post count up. LOL)

you havent seen many cores thats for sure. Not all silicone is polished like nVidias cores and that text is fine, you're eyes arent though. Heres an R420, omg its not shiney FAKE!

9k!!!!! That's a LOT of posts.

Yep, I have. If you look at the black square top of the supposed die, that's all you need to know. It doesn't line up with the physical edges of the core.

I wasn't pointing out the text, yadda yadda, I was pointing out that the supposed surface of the die is clearly "photoshopped" onto a likely existing X8x0 die. If the edges don't fit, you must "admit". :p

We know that a R520 core does exist and will eventually be released, we just question that the core being shown is the real deal. Sheesh.

But if the information that is posted with the "enhanced" core image is acurate, it's somewhat sullied by a fake image. If someone has information that is true, please don't go to the effort to fabricate an image.

Anyways, let's just all wait for real product and forget speculation about purchasing a 32 pipeline core. If it ships as 32 pipeline, fantastic... If it doesnt, fine... at least we'll know then what info was true and what was someones imagination. But I don't trust "anything" at all now about this topic, because QED it's been hyped as everything including the second comming. It's going to take shipping product to convice me now.

Silicone is not always polished, rarely is. Look at ram chips. and pictures of R420s around. And the text is fine, unless he thinks the image is flat when the chip is 3D and thats messing him up. I just think its rediculous the lengths people go to put down a thread about an ATI product.

looks kinda what I'd consider "polished" (the fake image). If it was real i'd expect some dust or some imperfection, especially if they placed a normal coin and their hand in such proximity to the card. Maybe some smudges.

It's not the shinny ness, it's not the text, it's that the top don't fit with the slanted edges of the core. The right corner has core surface material hanging off further than the edge of the core.

Rage3D has thread that is certain it's faked.
Beyond3d has thread that is certain it's faked.
There's two threads on HardOCP that have those that are convinced.
I'm certain that if I continue to look at other forums, I'll also see "fake" in the threads related to this image and it's source.

Shifra, we know that you love ATI, are convinced that the R520 will totally dominate, and that it's not late as an offical launch hasn't happened yet. Enough already. We understand, we have comprehension of what you are trying to tell us. But the point is, that specific image is faked. Note we are not talking about the cores themselves being fake, just that image. We know that you want to defend it as much as possible, because it'd help to validate the information posted with the image.

Let's just close this thread now and wait.

I find it funny the lenghts fanb0ys go to to prop up a certain company. ;)

God, the "R520" pic just looks too fake, like boobs on Pamela Anderson.

Anyways...

Any else wonder if a 32 pipeline (although it's not all about the pipes now) R520 can dominate a GTX does it really matter if then have less then 10 at launch?

Ahhh only if it were true....But yes. Its a little cheap PS edit..anyone could do it =)

I think the fact that the angles of the die "R520" are all too sharp makes it look fake. It seems as if someone has just stamped this photochop die over the die on another card. Clearly it has been edited.

Plus, if you really had one of these, wouldn't you take more pictures of the card?

Okay, to try to redeem my self, from my obvious lack of RTFM (or post in this case).

My point was, that just cause that pic may have been edited doesn't mean that someone doesn't have a R520 in there hands right now.

The R520 is real (which we all know)
The R520 is suspose to come out this month (doubt that, I do)
Maybe that pic is real and the guy who PSed the info off the chip was just a noob to PS.

Maybe his digi cam is low pixles?
Maybe he didn't use a flash

All I am trying to say, is give us some solid proof that isnt a real pic, minus the fact that someone has used PS in the pic (which is obvious).

Because its not impossible for someone to have a real R520 in there hands, which was the point I was (poorly) making, about my friend working at ATI.

Also, Crim, you have enough POSTs already, don't try to make this post into another post grab ;)

Thats actually been rumored for a while that ATI found a way to implement HDR and MSAA together. Im not sure what the performance cost would be for that, but if that is true, ATI might be able to shut up the G70 !!!!!!s finally.

so who's gonna show me the photoshop header in the pic, if it is photoshopped? This 2k header is added onto the file when the file is saved, as it is from any photo-editing program.

I dunno what "black square" is being refered to as "off", but i could take a pic of my 7800GTX, where the "writing" is not completely parallel, nor is the core perfectly square...it actually looks like it "has no anti-aliasing", because the sides are so jagged.

Now, seeing how i posted alot of the info you all are reading here, and seen it appear on major harware sites within 24-hours, i can personally tell you alot of the figures for speeds and such are garbage. Just google my name here, and see what i have posted on various forums, and then check the dates of the new articles. :D

If you guys want real proof..REAL proof, as to whether the picture is of a real card or not...check out the picture properly.

For the "naysayers"....the r520 has been in production since November 2004, according to Dave Orton, CEO of ATI.

According to Dave, R520 chips taped-out in November 2004 and original plan was to announce it seven to eight months later during the June-July period. Adopting smaller manufacturing technology delayed the schedule by a couple of months, but because of other challenges the engineers faced, the chips were delayed by an additional 2-3 months.

http://www.soneraplaza.fi/tietokoneet/artikkeli/0,2998,h-9112_a-303085,00.html

So, if the cards have been "taped out" (if you don't know what that means, that's the mask for the silicon die for the gpu's has been made and qualified for use) since November last year, ATI has been running one-offs in thier fab in Ontario since then. This means that the cards have been out there, but the people who have them have been under NDA and cannot release any info until it has lifted. What we are seeing now is starndard marketing fair to get the hype up before release, and get the product talked about. I guess once again it has worked.

Pretty much any product you hear talked about is already up and runnnig in some form or another. HKPC always has hardware before it comes out, most likely due to ties with sapphire.

BTW, there ARE compression artifacts on all the lettering, but what is refered to as compression artifacts on teh pictured GPU transistors is really thermal paste.

If the cores picture really is fake, would it be possible to figure out which core it really is? The transistors around the core might be good for narrowing it down. (e.g. It doesn't match the transistors around the 420 core Shifra posted)

 Once again for someone that didn't read the thread.

There are no naysayers.
The card (r520) does exist.
This isn't a real pic of the card.
It's an obvious photochop.

And yes I do like the name too. :)
