Radeon RX 470 Benchmarks from AMD.

Heck the only thing that really hurt amd last launch was the price started out to high and was way over the budget of most of the buyers......shit they getting ready to win back some market share the way things are looking right now. A metric shit ton of people come here all the time asking for the best card for the money up to 300 dollars. (this includes me) ...keep in mind if they could release vega today dont you think they would? There not holding back just to make people wait lol..They have made some dumb calls in the past but this isn't one of them....Anyone with sense can see that
Agreed. If everyone would take a moment and consider the converse of this situation they would see that if AMD really was going for halo release initially then they have a good reason for going mid range instead.

1: HBM2 is no where near ready for a widespread release.

2: Vega is a HBM2 release.

3: Big dies on new processes tend to have higher failure rates with elevated costs.

4: Smaller dies can better capitalize on defects and are much easier for a widespread release.

5: Based on previous release models, mid range is generally a few months behind highend/halo releases. Therefore competition at that level would be minimal.

6: Less competition means better saturation especially in a market where the bulk/lions share of the sales generally are.

So even if they had originally intended to go the same route as Nvidia, the writing was clearly on the wall. This isn't to say that Polaris isn't or is performing where expected. Regardless of intent, the end result is known, well somewhat, and obviously it is looking good to the masses.

And I surmise that this is in line with AMDs general plan they have adhered to for the last 3 or so years. They are looking to get software coded to their architecture. Couldn't get it done with X86 software in general, Intel has a stranglehold on that. But getting the consoles opened the door for that to finally happen. And it just so happens that consoles can benefit both their CPUs and GPUs from a software/optimization stand point. I think their strategy is sound and a very good idea. There is very little risk at the moment because they have no direct new competition. Of course neither does Nvidia in their tiers.

One reason to go go with the top end vice the low end is to prevent cannibalizing your sells of your previous generation. AMD just ends up cannibalizing Nvidia more then themselves. If the 480 performs at or above a 980 and can OC decently it would blow Nvidia market up. That is if AMD can actually produce enough of the product to saturate buying in the less then $300 market. I wonder what price adjustments AMD is going to make for the Fiji line? $329 for Fur/Nano? $399 FuryX - maybe that will come later when Vega is about to be released.

Conversely, you could argue that in this context having both Vega GPUs as an HBM2 release is a terrible idea.

Well yeah for sure, but I was gonna add the GDDR5X but felt that opened the door for nit picking but I do believe that they may use it for the other. Was trying to keep it as simple as possible is all.

"Win on Sunday, sell on Monday." Buyers are going to see that 1080 on top of the list, and as long as they can get something with NVIDIA GTX on the box be happy, even if AMD can compete on price and performance.

agree the 1080 is an amazing card and i definitely would of bought one immediately if it was 5 years ago.. but this day an age my eyes are absolute shit and i only play a few games which don't require absolute top of the line gpu's so i'll definitely be looking at the 480 for the power usage and price(feels weird saying that knowing that the gtx 480 was the polar opposite of AMD's soon to be 480). i definitely don't need all the crazy eye candy anymore but theres nothing wrong with people that do want it.

Same damn boat here. Used to have top of the line shit in my rig. Nvidia or radeon No fanboy stuff here. But getting older now, in my 30s and other things in life just start to take over but I do still wanna be able to play sometimes. Eyes just don't move as fast damn it. And I amalwsys in front of the computer because of work and I like to take some time off. Lol. Gaming edge just isn't there so hard to justify a 700 dollar card these days. Been there but looking at 480 for my next rig As I haven't really upgraded for 4 yrs now.

Don't worry, when the kiddies are no longer kiddies and rarely talk to you any more you will have a resurgence of game time and money in your pocket to burn on high end video cards and a Steam library you can't scroll through. As for seeing, many options there.

Many of us are long term players and back in the day the halo card was the same trick it is today , The affect only last so long when you come to understand that tech dies quick and the value with it .. so after one understands that, it makes life much better for there wallet because it take time to set a performance standard and smart buyers wait for it to come to them and not chase (Nvidia) down to throw money at them for halo products as these people are new to the game of fool and there money.

The reason I say that is because I have a closet full of video cards back to FX 5900XL behind me and it was just a waste of my money because they are worthless now , so these new AMD cards will set a new standard of how much money is needed (very little) to see new tech and replace halo cards with there performance.

So a smart buyer will do very good buying a 470/480 because rock bottom is closer then halo products.

Now to address the question about why I thought the 470 was insane performance , AMD is doing what use to take 300watts and a cut down Hawaii XT chip and doing it with 110watts and half the hardware it use to take.

If the RX 470 delivers on the rumors, it will be the first time in over a decade that a brand new $149 card was actually worth a damn for contemporary gaming and not a precipitous drop from the $200-$250 level (last time maybe being the Radeon 9600 Pro?) . I wasn't planning to upgrade for another year, but at $150 I might just bite.
