Someone on a different site wanted me to make a tutorial on doing the cooling mods seen here.

Go here for the tutorial.

Well you two do that now in the mean time I will be hitting 480+MHz on the GPU with my rad 9800.

If I would have bought those vga silencers for all my cards I would have been dishing out $60+ for them. These were leftovers from my PIV's.

That's really cool man, awesome guide. I might try that with my 9600pro once I get the courage for it. Can't afford a replacement right now so I'm not too much into dickin' with my card.

great googlie mooglie!
you doubled the cost of shipping there bud!

I have a few P4 heatsinks around, I was playing around with the idea of sticking them on my 4200, but I don't think I'd really benefit from much of an overclock running on my TV @ 800x600.
It would be an interesting project tho...

now what use can that actually give you....besides a possible higher benchmark....and how much louder is that going to be then our silencers...and how much more a pain in the ass will it be to install....and how better does a VGA Silencer look....and how much torque does that thing put on your card, our vga silencers come with their own bolt on so no extra torque is put on the card.

...and how much louder are your "silencers" than my water block?

To give you an example, the stock fan on a 9600 pro is louder than all the rest of my computer.

Last time I checked this was the [H]ard|Forum, not the let's crap on someone's thread because the OP is [H]arder than me Forum.

Nice mod. Over the top and loud but cool nontheless.

Why do they have to be loud? I can run the fans at 5v and still get awesome cooling? The reason I first did this mod along time ago was to passively cool my rad 8500.

There are a whole lot of questions here without question marks.

Liek i said I started it along time ago over a year ago when i passively cooled my 8500 and move the HS from that to my 9500's and 9800. The 9800 has the original one.

Well higher benches mean higher FPS in first person shooters with all the goodies turned on. You really had to ask?

and how much louder is that going to be then our silencers..
Probably alot quieter. Ever run a 80mm on 5v?

.and how much more a pain in the ass will it be to install..
If you are fumble finger like me it still wasn' that hard:D

..and how better does a VGA Silencer look.
I don' know in terms of HS's I think these look pretty sweet.

I suppose I could have painted flowers on the sides and put whizanging lazer LEDsall over the place.

hpw much torque does that thing put on your card, our vga silencers come with their own bolt on so no extra torque is put on the card.

Not much at all. I have done this to 5 cards.

Anyway if you want to simple and hassel free then go with your silencers. Like I said I saved my self som cash and get better cooling.

My bad, I honestly didn't read all of your article.

omg get off it. So you guys have vga silencers. Good for you, it's a nice product. This guy went out and modded his card himself. It's good, too. So it's not your cup of tea, lay off the guy. jeez...

I'm with this guy! :)

He did a very sweet job of modding his Radeon cards and posts a guide for people who might want to do the same and people actually have to nerve to crap on this thread? 12 years, they have to be 12 year olds. Nice mods Ol'man, I hope this doesnt stop you from trying to help out the [H] community in the future.

Hey dude I was'nt crapping on the dudes thread...Personally Im the kind of person that would rather build something than Buy it. Thats what got me into computers if the first place. Plus I think it is a great mod. However I took that remark to mean that people with vga silencer cant acheive his 480+..I was merely showing that they can..... Geeze people around here need to get a little thicker skin...

Did the XT bios help your OC? I am running lower volts @ 1.79v/3.0v. My samsung ram can run 380MHz at these voltages. Never tried higher voltages.

The XT bios did'nt help me @all, And i monitored my voltages while Flashing ...no increase...But the Voltmod helped a boatload. You should try it you got the cooling solution to up the voltage to @least 1.85 if not 1.9. Keep me informed...if your are already 480+ on stock voltage then im gonna get PWNED when you crank it up ..... Peace

Next time use a drill with a drill bit slightly larger than the capacitor.

You can drill through the backside of the heatsink (slowly) and recess a space large enough to fit around the cap.

Color the top of the cap with a black water soluble marker and sit the heatsink on top of it while the marker ink is still wet.

This will transfer the marker's ink, and the cap's position, directly over to the heatsink.

Nice job, btw.

I didn't want to wreck the heatsink that much. I used to grind away or drill out around objects like that. Moving the cap is getting easy after the first one I did. I used to have to move a cap to the backside on my old 8500's too.

just got home from school and had a chance to actually READ the article... the cap removal turns me off, and the copper slug would add a bit too much weight. I think if i did the mod i'd cut the heatsink up a bit more, but yours looks damn good without any damage to the heatsink... props

Just want to say awesome work, most custom coolers are AMD stock, i havent seen a P4 stock cooler yet, i have a copper 1u cooler on mine right now, and it weighs over 390g, hows that for weight? i have a stick supporting the card its so heavy

great work ol' man. I always have respect for homebrew mods like this. It seems that ever since companies started catering to the enthusiasts awesome mods like this one have become less and less common as people just opt to spend for premade hassle free products. But i think there's something about doing it yourself that's really worth the extra work.. if u have time, and the tools etc.

Also i agree with jmcmike, mods like this is what the hardforum is all about.

very nice ol' man!

here's my card:
9800P_angle.JPG

i'm getting 520 GPU :)

and i think the VGA Silencer is the biggest POS for the money. why would one ever buy that junk? they look like crap anyways, i think our heatsinks look 100x better

I just finished my 9800 today.

9800mod8.jpg

I also made permanent voltage mods to all the cards.

I am going to keep the voltages pretty mild. The cores are all at 1.79~1.81v. And memory is left around 3.0~3.05.

9800 volt mods.

I figured a different way to mod the 9500's here.
