Radeon 9800 pro is it capable?

I'm upgrading.

Buying the Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb -$133

It's going to be coupled with Chaintech VNF3-250 nForce3 250, AMD64 3000+, and PC3200 DDR 400.

I'm at my ends for expense; will this video card be acceptable??

High end gaming is my forte.

If I can do better for less, or do better for a tad more. tad = <$17 enlighten me.

Where are you getting a 9800 Pro for that cheap? If it's new, make sure it's not some crippled model, because for that price I'd think a new model couldn't be the full 256 bit one.

Overall, the 9800 Pro is still incredibly fast in pretty much every game. Yeah, the 6800's are sweet, but for the money you can't beat the 9800.

Yes, that is the dreaded 128-bit memory version. That card will not perform on par with the 256-bit models of the same name. It is still a "9800 Pro" in that it uses the same chip and architecture, but the memory bandwidth is halved, severly crippling the card. If you can swing it, 20 more will probably get you a refurb real Pro (256-bit) at Newegg. Both of these will have 128 MB of memory, but the 256-bit version will provide much better performance.

That card from the first link shows a clock speed of 325, That seems to be a 9800 not 9800pro. speeds for the 9800pro are 380 clock - 340 (680 effective) memory.

I wouldn't get that one.

That is not a 9800 Pro. In fact it is not even a 9800 non Pro, but a 9800 SE, which has a very crippled 128 bit memory interface and a slower than 9800 NP clocks. Barely any better than a 9600 Pro/XT. Sadly a real 9800 Pro will run you around $200.

Occassionaly stores will sell full 9800 Pro's with the 256 mbit memory bus for $180, but if you want a card cheap check out the FS/FT forums here. I got my full 9800 Pro a couple months ago when they were about $210 retail for $165 and it was more or less new. Definitely an option to check out, there are lots of good people with great deals.

In case you missed a couple of the above posts, stay far far away from bestbargainpc. And any other place you're buying from, check out the www.resellerratings.com rating. Like I said above, if you want to save money, check out the FS/FT forums. Otherwise the best way to get a cheap one is wait around and watch the HotDeals forum and see what comes up.

If I were you, I'd do as Deadlierchair suggested and browse the FS section of these forums. Chances are you can pick up used 9800 Pro for $150 or so shipped. Might even want to check Ebay. The 9800 Pro's just cannot be beat in that price range and are way better than that FX5700.
