Radeon 8500 question

So at the moment I have a ATI Radeon 8500. I'm waiting for the parts for my new machine to arive. I'm not replacing my video card till sometime in the summer. What I want to know is how the 8500 is likely to perform?

I'm upgrading to a P4 3.0C with a Asus P4C800-E Deluxe and 2 sticks of Corsair CMX512-3500C2

The games I'm planning on playing are FarCry, Battlefield Vietnam, and pretty much any other fps I can get my hands on.
 
The 8500 will work fine. Don't know exactly how well, but it will work fine depending on your settings.
 
Precisely what Bill said. You won't be able to run those said games at any decent playing level, being only a 64 MB video card with 4 pipelines, but it CAN run them.

I'm also not sure how the card might react with some newer games, depending on if they require Direct X 9.0b or not. In my experience with my 8500, I never installed DX 9. Compatibility is an issue here, so I'd read up on it.

To be honest though, if you are planning on playing such new games, I'd suggest picking up the Sapphire 9800 Pro off Newegg. At only $212, it's very reasonably priced.

the 8500 will hold its own in the newer games, just keep the rez down and you'll be fine. I have 2 retail 128 mb 8500's and they both run UT2k4 and BF1942 like champs at 800x600. At this point, i would at least wait another month to see what the next generation of cards are like before buying a new one.
 
My fiancee has an 8500 in her PC, and I've been able to play just about any game on it. She only plays the Sims, so it's fine for that stuff. Just keep the settings and the res down, and then adjust until you find a good combo.
 
I have a Radeon 8500 in my system as well, P4 2.8C (check sig). I'm in the same boat as you, i'm not a hard core gamer and want to wait until summer to upgrade so i can save a few bucks.

My card plays just fine with everything out right now. Plays UT2004, Battlefield Vietnam, and Need For Speed Underground with no issues at all. Now, you will NOT be able to play these games with "high" setting on. But you can play them with decent settings and they look just fine for an older card. You should have no problems waiting until summer, as long as your not a FPS junkie or anything.

Well considering I"m upgrading from a PIII 700 think I'll notice a huge inprovement no matter what. My last question is one of my friends has a Radeon 9000 he's not using is that likely to run much better than the 8500. He's willing to lend it to me until I upgrade.
