Which better

Both are agp and the GF3 is just the base model not the ti500 or 200 or whatever.

Gaming. Well i sold my good computer and i just wanan know which card is better b/c i own both. I think there around the same though.

I believe the 8500 is a far superior product, it ranks with the geforce 4 products.

I've owned a GeForce3 TI 200, Geforce4 TI 4200, Radeon 8500, and 9000pro, but I could never get the 8500 to run correctly. Supposedly, it was a better card than the 9000PRO which was a bit ahead of the GF4 TI 4200. So... I would guess the 8500 is the faster card.

Geez, I feel like I've entered a timewarp and exited at the year 2001.

BTW, why did you sell off your rig ?

The 8500 is better, but don't expect to be able to play anything from the last 6 years or so.

8500 +1, only because it supports DX8.1 which some games require. This site has benchmarks of the 8500 vs GF3 starting on this page: http://techreport.com/articles.x/3203/5

It is overall pretty close as you suspected.

If you have $30, you can get a 9600XT AGP or 9700 Pro AGP for that much shipped on ebay.

You could possibly game on an 8500 or GF3, but you probably won't be too happy running anything from the last few years. What were you planning on playing?

The Geforce3 is a DirectX 8.0 card, the Radeon 8500 is a DirectX 8.1 card.

The Radeon 8500 is a bit faster than a Geforce3 but a bit slower than a Geforce4 in terms of raw speed, but while the Geforce4 is also a DirectX 8.1 card, it only has Shader Model 1.3 whereas the radeon 8500 has shader model 1.4.

I know someone that uses a Radeon8500 along with an AthlonXP 3000+ to play World of Warcraft, which is playable on low settings.

My Laptop from ~2003 with a Pentium-M 1.4 has a Mobility Radeon 9200 which is pretty much comparable to a Radeon 8500 and I can play games like Counter-Strike: Source, Battlefield 2, World of Warcraft, Trackmania Nations, etc on low settings and it’s slow but it works.

I played HL2 the first time through with a GeForce 3 Ti200, I thought the graphics weren't too bad. Then I got a 7800gt and it was like night and day.

I'm sorry but, have I somehow traveled back in time? Geforce 3, Radeon 8500 ? lol

Get a 7300GT AGP for the £30 :)

My job sucks.. and i needed money  :(

Its okay though =] I start a new job tomorrow :D I'll buy a new motherboard and quad cpu this time around. Not sure on the video card, but i dont wWONT to spend $250 like i did on the 8800 GT and now its cheaper. I spent $240 on e8400 and now its cheaper. So im going to buy a quad and not the best on the market at the time because its a waste of money in the end,

When the 8500 came out, it was widely conisdered to be inferior to the Geforce3 (non-Ti). Many claim that with improved drivers it actually overtook the Geforce3 later on (but then Nvidia had already launched the Ti500 and later Geforce4). Neither card will run anything more advanced than Doom3 however, and even then you'll probably have to run it at 800x600.

640x480 is more like it. :\ Though, there are ways to tweak doom3 to run on crappy cards. There was one guy who got it to run on a Voodoo 3.

I had up to 3 128mb R8500s at one point. Still have one running in a spare box, but that machine is used for surfing these days. Image quality and video playback is still top notch though. I didn't think the 64mb versions were quite as good as the 128mb'ers (and a R9100 also). If limited to 64mb, I'd say it's a toss up between the R8500 and GF3, otherwise I'd definitely recommend the 128mb R8500 over the GF3 for a legacy gaming box (or just for watching movies).

Depends - is it a real 8500 or an 8500LE? If it's the LE i'd be tempted to go GF3. The only way you can tell is by checking the part number (especially if it's a Sapphire card).
