This may be easy for you but it's trying my patience.

I have a P4 Desktop with a Radeon 7200 ATI card. It's running W2k. An old computer for a senior citizen, me. Worked fine last week.

The HD crashed. Installed new disk, and reloaded W2k. Discovered that ATI now has an interface called Catalyst. Loaded Catalyst with, I think, no problems.

All I want to do is use the computer in a base format of 1024X768 32M. No 3d, TV out etc.

When I try and set the resolution above 800X600 Catalyst extends the virtual desktop beyond the edge of the monitor screen. I can't figure out how to make the higher resolutions conform to the monitor screen area.

Messaged ATI got a canned answer which ammount to reinstall everything.

Any help appreciated.
 
Are you using catalyst 6.10 ? Radeons older than 9500 stopped being supported in catalyst 6.6 onward.

Use Catalyst 6.5 ?
 
I think your problem is the monitor itself, see if you can mess around with the buttons that are on the physical screen and try to adjust the image until it fits
 
I can set the Desktop up to 1600X1200

I then drag the mouse pointer to the monitor edge and it reorients the view left right or up down. Everythings there. The viewable area is a small fraction of the desktop.

Not a monitor problem. Monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 900NF and is set correctly in W2k and Catalyst
 
How do I check the version of Catalyst?

Opening catalyst. OK I'm on Catalyst V6.3. I was selected for me by the ATI WSupport site
 
You try installing the drivers/INF files for your monitor? I had the same problem you are having and found that doing this fixed the issue.
