I have had the original Enermax Galaxy 1K PSU for a few years now, And its still working great, voltages rock solid. I am sure some of you would say to avoid certain disaster, now might be a good time to replace this PSU as preventative maintainance, correct?

Well, if thats not the case...
I am looking into a 6970 - and although my galaxy supports like 6 PCI-E 4 Pin connectors, I need to know if it is safe to use a PCI-E 4PIN to 8PIN converter to run the 6970.

I really think its BS that they changed the PCI-E Power Plugs :/

^see this.

dude, you'll need two of those, remember the 6970 uses 2x8 pin...

Can we get a fact-bomb dropped on this thread?
Is there any actual information on the power connector situation for the 6970?

yes. some of the leaked pictures show it. if that is reference or not I don't know.

edit: if your worring about doing the above you have another simple option, use the 2 6 pin to 1 8pin adapter http://www.google.com/products/cata...og_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CEQQ8wIwAA#

^see this.

6pin to 8pin should work fine on that http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200420

or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198016

if your worrying about doing that you can use the 2 6 to 1 8 adapter. http://www.google.com/products/cata...og_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CEQQ8wIwAA#

You don't need any power plugs for that card. It's powered by your imagination.

That depends on how much current there is going to be going through those wires and how much they are rated for. You don't want to melt any wiring and maybe even start a fire. There is a reason they went to 8 pins. Probably because it exceeds the safe rating of 6 pins.

6970 2x 8 pin? That can't be right. That would make it more power hungry than a GTX 480!

I'd like some light shed on the topic in general

I'm fairly sure its 12V and as long as the rail(psu) and wire(amperage) supports it, it doesn't matter how many times its split (as long as the connections are secure).

Something to watch out for, if your PSU is 100A but splits it across 4 rails at 25A each and the card requires 35A per port then the power supply would not be compatible. These numbers are purely fictional but it should get the point across.

Be sure the 12V rail has the amount of amperage necessary required by the card.

:disclaimer: I have no idea what the fuck i'm talking about ; )
