Hello folks...

I have searched and searched and I keep getting some mixed results. I just purchased a Sapphire Radeon 6870 (has not arrived yet) and I'm wondering how I'm going to connect 3 monitors to it.

Here's a link to the card:

Let me just start with I do NOT plan to run eyefinity... I want to have three separate screens.

Is it possible to use the HDMI port and two DVI ports for my three screens? Or, do I have to purchase a separate DP adapter?

you will have to use the dp if you want to run 3 screens @ once.

this ^ and pending on the resolution of the monitor that is connected, you will need an active adapter, if it is 1920x1200 or less than a $30.00 adapter will work, if you have a 2560x1600, then you need the $100 duel link active adapter

Also of note - if you end up with an adapter that does straight Displayport, you'll need an additional adapter to go Displayport to Mini Displayport.

I have two Dell 20" 2007FP (1600 x 1200) and a 30" 3007WFP (2560 x 1600). Can I use the 30 dollar active adapter and connect it to one of the smaller screens (20")? I would then use a dual link straight into one of the DVI slots and a non dual link dvi into the other dell. That would be the correct setup right?

That video card comes with a mini displayport adapter to display port. That will work right?

I have thay exact set up, and it works great

If someone had crossfire 6870's or some other high end card, could they use 3x DVI ports? (2 from one card, 1 from another)

No, all monitors must be plugged into a single video card when using Crossfire. Works with SLI though. You can install multiple video cards to run multiple monitors, but this setup will not work in Eyefinity or Crossfire. Adding a cheap HD5550 to run additional monitors will work fine.

The $30 ACTIVE mini DP-to-DVI adapter will work for any multi monitor setup (upto 1920x1200 resolution).

No, unless the included Sapphire mini DP-to-DVI is an active adapter (unlikely) it will not work for 3 monitors. Almost all consumer level video cards are limited to 2 DVI/HDMI signals, as the signaling requires gpu die/cost. Display port is away around this requirement without using gpu die for each monitor (DP can run multiple monitors with one signal). A passive adapter does not use the DP signaling and would be considered a 3rd DVI monitor (not supported).

Also of note, only one of the DVI ports on the HD6870 is dual link. Make sure you plug your 30" monitor into the right DVI port.
