Radeon 5870 or 6970?

Hey Guys/Gals

I'm after a new AMD/ATI Radeon video card. I've been looking at the 2GB AMD Radeon 6970 that costs around $359 AUD ($376 USD). The 6950 is only $20 less expensive, so I've ruled that out as an option.

However, the previous generation 1GB Radeon 5870 is on clearance for $259 AUD ($271 USD). The benchmark results show the 5870 only slightly behind the 6970. I plan to play games at 1920x1200.

What do you think the better choice is? Thanks. :)
 
Hard to say, really. If you're not considering crossfire, you're basically looking at anything from 5-20% performance gain with the 6970 over the 5870, maybe a bit more in a few selected titles where tessellation is a bigger factor. Meanwhile, the cost is almost 50% higher, so the price/performance ratio is not as good.

Which card are you on right now?
 
Playing at 1920x1200, as long as you are not planning on getting crossfire or increasing your resolution, the 5870 is probably the better buy. If you are thinking about crossfire or eyefinity in the future, it is worth the extra money for the extra VRAM and better crossfire performance.
 
If you can afford to spend the money on a 6970, then get the 6970. It kinda sounds like you don't upgrade with every generation/every other generation so the 6970 will last you a bit longer especially as games start to utilize more then 1GB of vram at their highest settings.
