Some pics leaked out.

What do you guys think ?

i know AMD has been one of the primary companies working on 3D hardware for companies outside of nvidia doing its proprietary 3d vision crap.. so it wouldnt surprise me at all that amd would release something soon..

I think it's the same tech as everything else. So it'll work just like it does on nVidia cards, or in the theaters. Neat idea, but unfortunately a lack of high refresh rate monitors makes it of limited use so far.

It's about time!

I just don't like the fact that the glasses aren't scheduled to come out until the second half of 2010. :(

lol @ second pic. It looks like someone just shopped the first pic onto a white background and copied in some various other product images. The picture in the top left is actually a shop of the bottom left if you look closely. The glasses have an IR receiver built in, they won't need to be plugged in...

So how do we know these glasses are actually associated with AMD?

it's a gimmik and I'm not supporting it :D

lol very cool... this will only advance the technology :) It would be nice for ATi and nVidia to get together and hammer out a common API for 3D gaming (or if MS added it to DX11.1). It would take some of the weight off of the developers shoulders to ensure it looks good on both units

edit: the thing looks very similar to nvidias setup, only with different plastic. I wonder if you'll be able to use the ATi unit with a nvidia card and vice versa

Charlie has an article on semiaccurate on this. He states the glasses will work with ati video cards and also on tvs.

The company will not sell glasses directly to end users instead they will sell them to tv companys and ati / board makers who will then sell them.

IT works on 60hz tvs up to 240hz tvs. So no new expensive monitors needed. It also uses a diffrent form of connection akin to blutooth but less power demanding and you can have a stadium worth of users without any interferance problems.

If i can get a pair for $50 to $100 i'd certianly give it a shot. The nvidia solution is just to expensive for me .

Bit-Cauldron is developing 3D Glasses and technology that will work on ATI cards and its launcher late this year. They were at CES. ATI themselves are not developing any 3D tech, but they will support it through drivers.

Nope. These are active shutter glasses and will work with your existing 60Hz monitors. 120Hz is not necessary for ATI's 3D hardware. I think NVidia's got the shorter end of the stick on this and their version of Eyefinity. With NVidia's 3D solution, you'll need 120Hz monitors. With their "nFinity" you'll need more than one card to enable triple wide gaming.

Not only that but the glasses will be compatible with other bit cauldron solutions so if your tv supports the bit cauldron hardware you can use the same glasses on your pc or your tv.

They'll suck if they do. This technology has been around since back in the CRT days (though the glasses weren't wireless then) and there isn't any hard minimum that they require. However, anything below a very high refresh rate and the flicker is obvious and annoying. 60Hz is extremely noticeable. In my testing with CRTs I found that about 100Hz was what it took to start getting perceptually flicker free graphics.

So sure, they can set it up so it'll work on any screen, but that doesn't mean it'll look good. If you want nice flicker free 3D, you'll need a 120Hz screen.

By the way, active shutter is simply the overall term of this technology, the technology of using LCD shutters in the glasses. Same tech nVidia uses. It is as opposed to polarization filters or colour filters which are the other two popular technologies.

So what do they do for the nausea, giddiness and even seizures that alternating 30Hz per eye causes? Include a pack of ginger pills with the glasses? A waiver against class-action lawsuits from epileptics?

nVidia's 3D solution COULD work with 60Hz monitors, but they dont want to sell hardware that will cause people to be sick and induce seizures. ATI may do the same.

:D I'm a bit of a 3D fanboy but even I wouldn't bother with only 30Hz. What irritates me most is that TVs have been running at 240Hz for a while... where are all the high speed monitors at? At 120Hz per eye I think the shutter glasses would be a lot less annoying for some people.

they're not "really" a 240hz display

their refresh rates are running at 120/240hz, but the input is limited to 60hz. I'm not sure if it's a bandwidth limitation or a technology limitation. As it is now, a dual link DVI cable is required for a 120hz... so I would venture to guess that you'd need two dual link DVI cables to run a single monitor at 240hz

I agree with you though, each eye running at 30fps would be vomit inducing. I've been borrowing a gtx260 from a friend of mine while I was waiting for my RMA to come in and decided to try TF2 in 3D with it (the 260 give anywhere from 60-80 fps in tf2)

The 260 didn't have enough HP to run the game at 60hz per eye and clocked down to 30... after 10 seconds I turned it off :\

Knew this was coming. Everything I've read says 120hz monitor needed for shutter glasses just like Nvidia. Only it appears AMD isn't going proprietary.

3D BluRay was being demoed by AMD during CES as well. For either NV or AMD to not support both of these in the near future would have been loss of market share even though they're both very new niche markets.

3D is the future but, I'll wait for the technology to mature another generation or two before I start caring.

I was watching this earlier today

They mention ATI a couple of times. What I found interesting is how the guy is saying the GPU will control timings or something. I don't know if this is already being done by others, but it sounds like progress.

You guys will probably be surprised how well it'll work at 30Hz per eye. Sure 60 per eye is better, but we're not talking CRTs anymore where the scan line draw rate at 30Hz was indeed vomit inducing. LCDs don't have that side effect. I've read others using similar tech to Bit Cauldron that don't experience nausea or umm, seizures at 30Hz per eye.

Scan liens have nothing to do with it, the fact that it'll be flickering at a visible rate on your eyes does.

x2

if you believe that 30hz per eye wont look like crap, I invite you to give it a try. Like I said, I tried it out with a temporary card that didn't have enough power to render TF2 @ 120fps and it was unplayable (it dropped the FPS to 30 per eye since it couldn't do 60)

Even 60 per eye will cause you to notice the flickering of the glasses slightly... IMO they really need to revise it to run on a 240hz display, 120 per eye :) Then at that point, you just need a GPU that's able to render that many frames per second lol

Before I got my 3d glasses, I was a little irritated that nvidia wouldn't let you use them on a 60hz monitor... even if you understand that it wont be an optimum experience, but after actually trying it at 30 per eye, I can understand why they did that.
