Currently at work we have four or five servers, spread all over the building. All but one are in standard ATX cases (I believe the other is in an EATX case, but I think the motherboard itself is actually ATX). Recently there has been talk of moving all of the servers into one dedicated room for easier maintenance, and I was asked if we should consider a rack mount system. I honestly have no idea if such a thing is necessary, and if it were, what I should be looking at buying. Can anyone point me toward a "racks for n00bs" guide, or offer some advice? I'd appreciate it.

idk if you can convert atx boards into a rackmount chasis. Would ya'll be buying new stuff, or converting? If you're not buying new stuff, dont' worry about a rackmount, just line them up on a wall/desk or whatever, and AC that room like mad.

I have no clue about server stuff, but other people in my company do, as I work in an IT solutions firm. :)

I wouldn't say it's really necessary to rackmount them, but it would keep them organise and make maintenance and expansion easier.

How critical are they? Is the company also considering UPSs, networking kit etc in this setup? If so then a rack would probably be best.

It really depends on your budget. You can get a two post or a four post rack. Racking active servers may be un-doable as they may need to remain operational and also you don't want to risk anything simply for putting it in a rack.

I would relocate all these servers to one room that is under lock and key, purchase a used rack cabinet from ebay or something, and then when you add in new servers or replace existing servers, you can purchase rack servers.

Also, you can put your switches, and routing equipment in the cabinet too... now you will be able to lock it and everying will be more secure (assuming you got a cabinet with doors).
