rackmount from a 4u tray

I want to put together another machine based around an e-atx board. it needs to be rackmount & quiet.

I have an idea that I can use a 4u rack shelf (no front, lid or back) with a perforated 4u blanking plate (the front) as the basis of a case, bolt in th m/b psu & a boot disk (or even totally offboard scsi in another box). I figure I need to add some studding & square section alloy bar to improve rigidity (and provide fan mounts). the back and top I will just leave open.

If I don't need a CD or disk it can be this simple? (I'll use an external scsi disk to boot it )

do you think this will be rigid enough? and will airflow be an issue?
 
I did something like this a little while back for a rack I did in my basement. I took a 2U tray and JB Welded standoffs on the tray and mounted a motherboard, PSU, and hard drive.

IIRC about EIA specs, the tray must be able to hold 50 lbs. on it's flange (Ears), which you should be able to do with what you propose, otherwise you have to support it with mounting rails. Only issue I see is a 19" wide shelf gives you about 17 1/2" width to play with, but if it's deep enough, you can arrange things nicely. I like the fan idea, and don't think airflow would be a problem.

I hope you build yours, I'd like to see how it turns out.
 
I've ordered the front panel already, gonna be picking bit & pieces up over the coming weeks...
