I have five 4U computers, 2U UPS, 1U Switch, 2U slide out screen, 1U keyboard/touchpad, and a few extras in my six foot rack.
No mods, these are strictly my servers and a couple sandbox machines.

Why would you mod a rackmount case or rack? They're built to be locked in a dark room away from the world. Just to warn you, a 2u case will be really loud if end up gettin one. 
I'm buying a Tyan 1u P4 server thingy for a linux box/Cisco tool, its too thin to mod it any way heh. But if you really really wanted to, and you had a 3u or 4u case then i guess putting watercooling in it wouldnt be too hard.

you dont really end up saving space by putting your computers in a rack unless you have enough computers to actually fill the rack.
Racks are usually 19" wide (or wider) and (generally speaking) will go to your ceiling, or close.
If you want to save space, get a shelving system that is as deep as your computers

I have 2 4U cases, waiting to get this 42U HP rack from a friend of mine. Plan on also getting a rackmountable UPS, Gigabit switch, 4 port KVM, maybe a couple more 4U cases for a fileserver and testserver etc.
The only problem is that those things (or anything rackmountable) cost an arm and a leg here in Finland... And yes, smaller the U, louder the noise, hence the 4U cases which can be made quietish with the right components. Absolutely no mods, though backlighting the front panels with blue leds or cathodes would look cool. ("It´s alive!!!") ;P

I have played with the idea. Someone posted a link to a site that showed how to build your own rack. I believe it was lost in the "Great Forum DownTime" though.

Having a rack is nice if you like to overindulge yourself when it comes to your home network I had 2x Compaq Proliant 3Us and 3x 4U systems, plus a crapload of networking equipment..used it as a test bed for work, as sometimes its nice to not spend ALL my time away from home. Now that I do most of my work through VPN I retired my at home network.
As it stands now, I have gotten rid of most of it and am actually looking to sell off my 42U HP rack. It isn't something you ship...so while there are a lot of interest in the things generally shipping is off the chart...especially ones with side panels and doors to add to the total weight.
