So how does my R9 290x fair nowadays? Is the Rx 480 8gb finally pulling farther away than it or is it 10-20% still?
 
Depends on the game and driver, but the 290X is still plenty for 1080P and can squeak by at 1440P in some titles. What resolution do you play at?
 
at stock settings depending on the model of the 290X they can trade blows, once overclocked despite power consumption the 290X will perform better as it scale better 1150+/6000mhz+ clocked 290X it still one heck of a good card properly fed by a good CPU.
 
This is mine running on Ryzen 1400 at stock speed , 13,571 is way above 3DMarks 290x scores for the card as that is what a 390x scores as it is about to overtake the 980GTX .. the clocks are 1020/1350 but it's not overclocked it is called New Edition as it does not throttle like early 290x's . funny thing is it cost $269 and came with some games (remember them days) if I payed for the game then the card was free .
