R9 290 is fast..

jesus if it comes in at $399 and performs as rumored it's a steal. my math for the price paid for my 290X is $580 - (5% promo code) - ($60 BF4 included) = $491. i realize this math doesn't apply to everyone since some don't give a shit about BF4 but i was picking it up regardless. i felt ok with the premium i paid if the 290 released at $450. but at $400 it doesn't seem like such a stellar deal anymore :D

$400 being the case... the only question is... will 290 be reference coolers only?

Non reference coolers will be available in December I expect. People are having lots of success with mounting Gelid Icy Rev 2 coolers on 290xs, though (core AND VRM temp drops - excellent in both departments actually), and the cooler goes for as low as 35 euro.

So that means the custom cards will be ~$450? Makes me think real hard about not getting a 780 then, considering the only one I really want is the HOF and that currently goes for $540. And is NDA up on this tonight?

That's a game changing price, there's really nothing at that price point that can compete with that card, and IMO nvidia is all out of price cuts. Realistically, all they have left would be to drop the price of the 780 AGAIN and let the TI compete with the X at the highest tier, and it's just not going to happen. If this was what AMD planned from the beginning by spacing the releases of the two 290's, then my hat's off to them, their strategy worked, they have nvidia literally by the balls in performance in every price point except at the highest level, the TI should outperform the X but it comes with a $150 premium meanwhile AMD is sitting pretty with 2 much more affordable cards tearing up the rest of the market.

@$400 & my gaming limited to 1080p, I may have found my 4850 replacement at long last :)

I'm not sure I trust Euro prices to determine base/NA pricing. In my experience the relationship between how they price things on the continent and how NA pricing works is only loosely correlated, there are just too many differences in the retail situations between the two regions to draw a whole lot from.

Having said that, 399 for the 290 was my dream price target so I really hope that is the case. :)

I expect them to release a 770TI. Just a hunch of course.

NDA's up in a couple of hours and the [H] review will be out then too.

Looks like the 780 is due for another price cut, I'm going to wait a few weeks and see what happens. I was just about to pull the trigger on a 780 GTX because of the game deal, but at this rate it will cost more along the lines of 450 bucks soon.

I am a hardcore nvidia fan... but right now amd has all of my attention. Holy smokes this is impressive. I feel like the tide is turning.

Same. As soon as I see some really good non-reference offerings I am immediately jumping ship to Team Red.

Glad I can still return my 290x until December. I have 2 EK waterblocks on the way though...Hmm.

I'm leaning towards the 290 (non reference cooling)...but I want to see some Mantle benchmarks (and not just BF4 benchies)

I have been using Nvidia for years... goodbye Nvidia, we had a good run.

HELLO AMD!!

Cheapest is $450 I can find in local retailers in canada and thats reference. Non reference be minimum $20 more. Ill keep mine. $530 for 780 plus 6 games just as good.

Yeah if you already ave a 780 definitely not worth the trouble of switching especially since 780 is quieter

Reviewers are really overblowing the noise problems though. At least Anand who recommended against the R290 on account of it's noise.

We're enthusiasts, we dont care about noise. All of us want that $400 screaming fast card. This thing is going to sell like hotcakes period, speed is king.

That said, AMD evidently really needs to redesign it's cooler, which I'm sure they will get around too eventually.

not really true...some noise is fine but nobody wants a turbine engine blasting away in their case...I specifically bought low noise fans for my system...especially after years of relatively quiet Nvidia cards the difference might be more noticable

noise isnt a concern for me, i already have a reference 7950 leaf blower in my case that mines litecoins
