R700.. coming soon

Ok, here's an awesome source: www.fudzilla.com It's founded by Fuad Abazovic (the main guy who left theinquirer.com) and it is one of the best sources of rumors and latest disclosures. Occasionally, some other website might give you info a day or 2 earlier but what harm is waiting 1 or 2 days to know everything, since almost everything is up on fudzilla.com.. it's actually better than what the Inquirer was, with slightly improved benchmarks (still awful, though...).

Not to get on Kyle's nerves, but I think Kyle's starting to compete with Fuad Abazovic by telling "undisclosed" news on future cards (see the article on 9800GX2 on HardOCP main page).. and today's recent post releasing much-appreciated info. on R700 not being limited by Crossfire scaling and AA bug, on this very thread.

Awesome, dude!

The difference is, Fuad (heh, did you know R520's codename was Fuad? A coincidence, but funny nonetheless) posts up every bits of rumor he hears through the grapevines with no regards to their validity. Kyle seems to only post stuff that he finds reliable.

Yep, that is exactly it. Kyle always has a reliable source to back him up, if he doesn't, he will state that it is only his opinion. Fuad on the other hand, doesn't even do the research, he just posts shit for clicks.

Kyle only posts information he's almost certain to be true. That's the difference between this site and a lot of others on the web.

If he were to speculate on things more often, we'd run into issues with people thinking that his speculation is actual fact. Even though I'd be interested in his guesses, it's better that way, because "Kyle said this" will carry a lot more weight when most of the things he says are certain.

But he's not entirely infallible. Back before the Geforce FX was released, he said "We have seen the GeForceFX work its magic through more than a few demos, peeks of them should be available at NVIDIA's web site. What we have seen has been very impressive and there is no doubt that the GeForceFX is quite powerful" yet the FX series came out with quite dissapointing performance. It just goes to show how misleading demos can be and that real game benchmarks are the only benchmarks worth considering.

What I'm doubtful about is that R700 isn't really "crossfire on a card". Surely, having the cores so closely interconnected and sharing memory will be quite a bit different from crossfire in its traditional sense and 'scaling' will probably be better. But will it continue to do AFR/SFR techniques for parallelism, or can each frame be worked on by mulitple cores simultaneously? It would be fantastic if a game that doesn't scale well in regular crossfire all of a sudden gets 80%+ gains per core, but how would they accomplish this?

It's exciting, anyway. After the Geforce 9 series preview, I'm more interested to see whether ATI can bring more meaningful performance gains for this year.

However, regarding the impossibility of R700 not coming out until 2009, I think it's a pretty safe bet.

I had to read that twice... double negatives :D I've said multiple times R700 series is coming out in 2008, nobody listened :p

Ok let's pretend the 2900 XT doesn't exist and I'll say the same thing for the Geforce FX series then we move on from there.

r700 sounds pretty innovative but in a way when you look at ityou can't help but think 3dfx were doing something very similar 8 years ago. Maybe not exactly the same but the basic principle of several less powerful cores instead of one superpowerful core is intact.

I dunno if they wree ahead of their time or not, just seems strange to see this idea seemingly being brought back along with sli and crossfire in recent years. And before anyone says it yes im aware gpu's are already made up of smaller units. Not the same as what ati are attempting though.

all computer parts are like this. We are so excited about 2 , 4 , 8 core cpus that we forget that its the same concept as back in the day when we used dual chips.

The gpu is the same the rops are set up in quads . So you have 2 , 4 , 6 ,8 , 12 , 16 and if you notice we've had chips evolve just like that.

Dual chip is just a natural progresion .Ati did this a decade ago wit hthe rage maxxx. There are many benfits You have 2 chips which means you can have one shut off when in 2d mode , you have a much larger surface area to cool , you also can pack in less transitors and run them at a lower voltage because of it.

I'm a bit anxious about that R700, seeing how it will be.. and that 9800GTX (hmmm... what exactly is it going to be-- 30% faster than an 8800GTX, or 100% faster than an 8800 Ultra????) Not too sure if I can trust Kyle's words myself, really.

Man, all of this R700 info makes me wish I had gotten that new product testing co-op job at ATi for the winter, well it was something related to product testing anyway. Oh well, thanks for the info Kyle.

(that said, I love where I did end up for my co-op)

i'm running nvidia now but i hope ati does better. i really prefer them over nvidia :(

Well if it makes you feel better, I don't believe anything you say. And surely you are much better informed than I am.

That said, care to wager something? Put your money where your keyboard is?

Kyle, by chance do you have a date yet on when [H] will have their hands on a R680?

Bo_Fox, you sure have the early and sizable lead in tool sack poster of the year, and we aren't even out of the first month yet.

They obviously have them already, probably have for a couple of weeks now if the release is this wednesday.

Unless you're just a crybaby, mind please telling me what was wrong with my above post because i'm kinda confused on how it made you whine like that.

LOL put my $ where my keyboard is, sure no problem! just kidding .. Hey, I would like to believe that an 9800GTX is more than just 30% faster than an 8800GTX. Isn't that what you said? Still not very optimistic for me, though, because I was expecting way more.. plus a rumored feature that allows 4x FSAA with zero perf. hit.

Oh yeah, now I remember you said it's AT LEAST 30% faster than an 8800GTX, right?

To: Nvidia, get that--did you get what Kyle said about the upcoming R700? You better start getting busy with your G100 chipsets at 55nm if ATI's gonna release a "quad-core" R700 all in one die with real hardware (not Crossfire) scaling, WITHOUT that AA bug!

Thanks to Kyle sharing info on R700, now Nvidia knows better (assuming that they believe you) and Nvidia will probably beat ATI to the punch once again by releasing something earlier like they did with an 8800GT before HD3870.

Let's join hands and form a prayer circle that an R700 will be a kick-ass architecture that keeps ATI through all the 12 rounds at this boxing match.

Please tell me and I'd love to hear anything intelligent rather than something like winning the "Stalker of the tool sack poster with nothing better to do" of the year.

I mean, honestly, what was wrong with my previous post?????? I'm actually hoping here that ATI will do much better this time around, and I do appreciate Kyle giving us hopes with positive reports on the R700. And I do believe Kyle on what he said about the R700.

Plus the info. Kyle provided will just encourage Nvidia to do better (with us customers being the winner).......don't you agree? *winks*

They've probably already got a pair, or at least will very soon. NDA isn't supposed to be lifted until the 23rd.
