R600 has 512-bit external memory bus

I wonder what the G90 or G100's will be like... :) probably with 1GB or 1.5GB of VRAM at GDDR5 or something like that. And the GX2's... :p ;)

The 6800 Ultra and the x850 were selling well above 400 when they first came out.

At least you can buy a 8800 :p. Nvidia almost always has hard-launches. The same cannot be said for ATI. :p
Are you forgetting the 7800GTX 512? Not only was it totally unavailable, but it was prohibitively expensive as well. And people defended nvidia for it too!

Both companies seem to have learned their lesson about launching hardware, fortunately for us.

I don't remember anyone defending NVIDIA for that. And there was nothing to defend anyway. The 7800 GTX 512 was a limited edition card, that NVIDIA launched to get the undisputed performance crown . There were only a few to begin with. NVIDIA thought that launching a card @ $650 would keep most people away from it, but they were wrong.
And it was a hard-launch. They were sold as hot cakes. The existing stock of cards was bought even BEFORE the official launch date, so it was "normal" that there were even fewer cards than expected, at launch date.

I think there should be required production numbers to compete for the "crown".
Like FIM rules for homologation purposes. :D

Those 512mb 7800GTX were sold out in less than a week and cost $1000 on ebay.
How many in total were manufactured ? I doubt even 1000 copies.
