R600 Crossfire- all platforms now??

There we rumors a while ago that ATI will be letting their crossfire configurations to be run with any dual pci-express chipset with the R600. Anyone hear anything further in regards to this?
 
I think that'll be classified as only a rumor until the release of R600. AMD is rumored to show off their new RD790 at Computex (though this was only mentioned by Fuad, so take that with the largest grain of salt you can find), so perhaps they'd talk about it there.
 
What does ATI mean by 'Integrated' Crossfire then?
 
I assume that it means that there is absolutely no dongle involved... just the internal bridge connector.
 
I thought one could already take two R580s and use them in Crossfire using newest drivers? No dongle needed.

Daily-Tech made mention of it just today, and AMD is preparing a San Francisco bash where itmight make an appearance.

The X1950 Pro still uses an internal bridge, and the X1950XT/XTX still use the external dongle. The lower end cards can go without the dongle, but the high-end cards still need the bandwidth, which can't be supplied through the PCI-e bus.

I didn't know that. Hopefully the integrated comment refers to dongle-less all around.
 
It sure as hell had better use an internal bridge and no external dongle! We just ask for an internal bridge... and sharks with frikkin laser beams on their heads! Is that so hard, DAAMIT?

Integrated means that it no longer uses an external arbiter chip on the board, and that functioin is part of the GPU itself. And yes, the external dongle is gone and it now uses an internal bridge like the X1950 Pro.
 
The problem with the external dongle is mostly not being able to find a CF edition (a reasonably priced one) card if you want to go crossfire like 6 months after the initial release. They are not produced in large numbers to begin with and discontinued after a few months, X1800CF is prolly a good example of this.
