R520 third tape-out

I thought tapeouts take months. How'd this get done so fast? :confused:
 
Sounds to me like two r520's in Crossfire is gonna smoke.

"Silicon revision (also "all-layer" revision) means a whole new tape-out of all layers of the chip. A "metal revision" means only a change to the metal layers - basically a wiring change. A metal revison is faster, as often some wafers a manuafctured only up through base layers. So a metal spin can start with these wafers held "at contact", and come out of the factory only a few weeks after the new metal masks are completed.

If ATI does names things "the normal way"...

A0 == first silicon
A01 - A0X == 0 or more metal spins on first silicon base layers
A1 == second all-layer tapeout
A11, A12, A13 == 3 metal revisions

Stepping A13 in the usual way would mean they've had 2 all-layer tapeouts and at least 3 metal spins past that."

Holy shit, guess what... companies don't always have to release rivaling products at the same time. If R520 is faster than the 7800, then it will sell. Sucks that ATi couldn't release on time to rival with nV this time, but it's better than the x800/6800 launch. I'd rather have them release later, but for real. On a side note, props to nV for actually getting a nice amount of 7800 to the people.
But back to ATi, all I can say is sucks for them. Saying "OMG FUCK ATTI THEY WIL DIE BECUASE OF THATT IM NOT BUYING A R520 NOIW!!!!" is a bunch of crap.

In electronics, tape-out is the name of the final stage of the design of an integrated circuit such as a microprocessor; the point at which the description of a circuit is sent for manufacture.

The term refers to the writing of the magnetic tape with the final data file describing the circuit layout and other details. The term is still used even though magnetic tapes are now rarely used for this process.
