The Inquirer

Basicallly they let ATI off easy as usual (as any nVidia fansite practically licks nVidia's boots). Even they admit to finding info that the R520 is delayed, and just yesterday they were going "No".

Ahh well.

The inquirer also said that the G70 was going to require two molex power connectors, even on PCI-E.

Yeah, they "reported" it would consume 150W.

it fun to read inquirer's article, but dont' alway believe it @ all lol. i like to read bullshiter's article btw. :)

i seriously doubt ati wanted the 6800 / sli series to stomp all over it and now the 7800 is just fisting them.

i doubt ati Wants to be in this position.

more like delays occured like the mgt said in the conference call and now they cant really do a paper launch so they are under even more pressure.

It's worse than that, their arch-retard (Fuad) said it was as much as 225W.....

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=22917

But it's unfair to call the Inquirer a joke just because their graphics guy (Fuad) is a total and utter asshat. Most of their news is pretty spot-on and I'm sure they've got some very good sources in the industry - without doubt better than the ones we forum-monkeys have! Most telling of all is the fact that pretty much all hardware news sites link to their stories on a regular basis. That in itself shows the credibility of the Inq's stories. Sure, they're not always right and Fuad spews crap from every orifice in his body but I generally find the Inquirer a very reliable source of info. Maybe you doubt the accuracy of their stories because of the drollery they employ in their writing?

It seems that the G70 launch made an impression on our neighbours to the north, and ATI is not going to do a paper launch for short term accolades. Instead, it is going to hold off until it can pull the same stunt as Invidia did, availability from day one. If that means it will be a little delayed in launching, so be it.

I like how the call availability a "stunt" and that the delay is ATI not wanting to do a paper launch. It almost sounds like they were going to paper launch and NVIDIA spoiled it for em.

I think ATI already mentioned a delay to it's investors, so I doubt it's a marketing thing ( you don't want to mess with your investors like that).

I hope that the delay is to accommodate availability on launch day that way people can buy cards and post em here so we can see the real stuff.

I forgot that. :D

theinq has 3 main categories of sources:
1) anonymous hotmail "tips" that are wrong 80-90% of the time. The poor track record never stops the (mis)information from being posted.
2) factual leaked info from reliable sources. Doesn't happen very often, but it sometimes sneaks in.
3) press releases. Sometimes posted as it, sometimes spun to reflect biases and sometimes horribly twisted into outright lies.

Theinq has yet to ever, ever issue a retraction. As you can see in the article linked above, Groo and Co. never admit they're wrong even when it's painfully obvious. Theinq is not a "news" source, and definitely not even a reliable rumor site.

Theinq is a joke. It reminds me of what the dumb kids wrote in high school journalism class, the stuff that was never published in the school newspaper because it was too poor quality.

The inq is the trash paparazi of the technology sector, imo.

True...

But I heard that their milkshakes bring all the boys in the yard.

Becuase their like better then yours.

as with everything... you can read, take what seems reasonable to you, and make educated guesses from that info and other materials you deem fit. :)

Sometimes they are correct with their information sometimes they arent.

I have started to lose faith in them over the last month though.

Seems like even more BS is coming out of them lately.

They used to be alot more accurate then alot of the stories they are publishing lately. It seems like they are just reading the forums and saying they are their "insider sources". A lot of the rumors are appearing on the forums first and then in the inquirers website latter.

"R520 is Delayed...Reason...Marketing? "

I'm guessing its because they aren't ready to release it yet.

And thats pretty much all that matters.

Smartest thing ive seen in here.
Companies dont let the competitors release nex-gen products twice in a row without responding because they have their own nex-gen product ready go, but are waiting for the right "marketing time"

The bottom line, it aint ready and wont be for some time.

There is no marketing involved in the delay. It's probably production problems for them. If ATI video card was ready to go we would have heard about it to counter Nvidias 7800 GTX release. Also mentioning the delay to investors as a marketing tactic isn't a good idea :)

I'm not sure if that's as good an idea as it used to. That may have worked with other components where there's usually just one version of a product that goes out. In the case of video cards, if the right marketing time were to ever come out and a manufacturer releases, their competition will just counter with a 'refresh' of their own product.

Now that people have seen the 7800GTX, ATI now has a possible 7800Ultra hanging over their heads just waiting for the R520 to come out.

EDIT: Revised. My grammar suxors.

To be honest, im surprised Nvidia released the 7800GTX when they did...my guess was they where originally waiting for ATI to release their R520, and then trump em with the 7800GTX. However, they got tired of waiting, LOL

Not me... I'm just surprised Nvidia waited long enough, knowing that pwning ATI twice is a good but rare stunt in the market.

Myself, I think ATI didn't want to look like dumbasses doing a paper launch when Nvidia has the availability along with his launch.

Agreed, my theory is they were planning on paper launching the series like any other release, but G70 availability upon launch goofed up "business as usual" for ATI. Now I think they've pretty much been forced to follow suit, and the "delay" is about production ramping up to widespread availability for R520 upon launch, setting things back the typical amount of time that it's taken for past products to become available after recent paper launches: 1-2 months.
That my $.02.

Sounds reasonable.

ATI's planning to get out of the desktop market entirely and focus on making the chips for the billion Xbox360 units that Microsoft is planning to sell...;)

Most likely, anyone that knows those kind of details is under a NDA.

Not likely, Microsoft themselves are the ones handling the orders. It shouldn't affect ATI's production for the PC video segment at all.

With the power invested in me from the lord of all computers I predict...... September launch.

I was kinda aiming for sarcasm rather than satire...

I doubt a 24 pipe card would be trumping whats widely rumoured to be a 32 pipe card at anything.

*fixed*

I'm still upset over the fact i had to wait a month on my X800XL direct from ATI and never did get my X850XT PE from Chumbo.

You know, that's really fucking rude, but anyway......

Why do you think they're pushing back in the first place? Oh that's right, to avoid a paper launch, they know from a business level up that they can not do another paper launch and expect for their products to be accepted well into the market.

I had no problem at all getting my X800XL 3 days after it first showed up on review sites, no clue what your problem was.

ATI can do a paper launch if the R520 is better than the 7800. ATI fans will wait if they know how much better it is,if any. Even if it's the same performance as the 7800 They will still wait. I dont think now they need to have them available at launch. But i think Nvidia still has something left when the R520 is launched.

The 7800 wasn't just a speed boost, it was an architecture change that also happened to be more powerful than two of the previous generation...also from what I've seen it overclocks really well, which is always a good sign for things to come...

You probably didn't order from ATI.com like a bunch of us did when they first popped up for pre-order. You most likely ordered a Sapphire or PowerColor.

grave you were lazy and that's why you didn't get your card when you wanted it. you think 5 point and clicks is enough to get you w/e you want hu?

I had the impression that getting a preorder meant you get first dibs directly from the manufacturer.

Preorder means you order now and possibly pay in part or in full up front, and they give you one when they have stock...
