R520 Delayed?

ATI should just go ahead and throw in the towel. If they cant produce what they design then why even try? By the time they get anything out the door lately Nvidia is at least 3 or 4 steps ahead of them. At this rate ATI will have the R520 out the door and on shelves when Nvidia has the G100 out there.

no because then nvidia jacks up the price of its video cards.

If it still has all the rumored pipelines then it wont matter, because then R520 will be quite a bit ahead of nvidia and they will be playing catchup, which means that ATi will then have a large lead on nVidia. It's a seesaw game, lets all hope the delays are so that they can provide a good clean launch like the 7800GTX launch was.

It sounds like a fall release availability wise anyway, who says NVidia won't have a fall refresh to counter the R520?

They might as well go ahead and do it now cause ATI has no answer to the 7800 sereis and prolly wont for quite some time. And $600 is raping and jacking up prices if you ask me.

We don't know what nvidia has up its sleeve. At this point I don't think it's a seesaw game. More like the waiting game for nvidia. I honestly don't think the 7800 gtx was all nvidia had.

not good news for ati...

mr obvious to the rescue!

Been delayed since about, lets see, April?

Very simply going to say then then dissapear from this worthless thread.

High yield 32 active pipe version. Stopping at a 24pipe pro. They will be available at launch. Good day. Dispute dispute, name call and nag. Enjoy yourselves.

$600 doesn't seem too bad considering the X850 XT-PE holds an MSRP of $550 along with the X850 CrossFire master card when it's out. ATI pushed the prices up with the PE’s and now NVIDIA simply seems to be charging more a little more for a faster part. Anyways, what goes up must come down; just wait for the 7800’s siblings to be released. :)

If more people bought ATi cards for their superior 2D Image Quality then they wouldn't be so expensive, I hate the quality of the 2D on this nVidia junk.

That mightve been true 4-5 years ago, but if you claim that now, youre just grasping for a reason to hate nvidia.

i have a few ATI and NV cards here. i cant tell the difference between any of them.

um.. totally off topic.. but OK!

erm 6800 and 7800 2d quality is atleast as good as ati's. now if you count digital vibrance, i say its better.

To reply to both of you.
I noticed a decrease in image quality from my 9600 Pro to this 6600GT.
No, more people buying ATi = more money for ATi = less delay.

why buy an inferior card?

ive never liked that arguement .

OOOO the companys in trouble... let me put my hard earned money into something clearly inferior.

NO, thats just what you should not do!

do not reward a company for makign crap.. punish them.

hell, we all punished nvidia for that monstrosity that was the 5800 aka nv30.

that thing SUCKED!!

and we rewarded ati for the beautiful r300, aka 9700

punishment is what propels innovation. The fear of losing ones job keep products comming out that are innovative.

I doubt pricing can get much worse than it currently is. Also, competition does not drive down prices in this case. Rather, ATI and NVIDIA price their cards high to maximize profit.

Totally agree with this!!

Totally agree with this too... wtf people Nvidia aint done.. they just arnt rumer punks like ati... Ati puts its core name out 3 months ago and everyone wets their pants... Nvidia has just brought out there new card just so people, with say 850PE ,see that their card is shit and get a GTX.. with 24 pipes.. Nvidia is using this as a hook... because of the whole Delaying thing.. i think nvidia KNEW about the R520 not going to be out forever.. so it brings somehting out that they probly never planned just to one up the ATI so they are in the lead... and when the R520 DOES come out.. Nvidia has their planned card ready for action...

my 2cents

Exactly.

Quit using programs that compute the mathematical difference between screenshots and actually look at them. You'll notice they're basically the exact same. There may be some minor difference, but if you're paying that much attention to them then you've got seriously misplaced priorities when it comes to gaming.

I do believe ATi cards have much nicer Anti Aliasing... as well as my previously stated 2D quality.

Above poster: So me reading text all day noting that is isn't as nice looking compared to my 9600 Pro is using programs to notice? Ok.

7800GTX has superior AA to ATI X8xx cards with its Transparency MSAA. You should check out the reviews. 2D quality is the same.

1. they both use 400mhz ramdacs. any difference you saw is in your head. i went from a 9600p to a 6800gt, no difference whatsoever.
2. more money does not always equal faster development, and the number of poeple that buy ATI due to the 2D quality has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

thats all i'm sayin on teh topic, your post was obvoiusly flamebait - and im not going to help turn this thread into a flamefest, like many threads in this subforum tend to do.

edit: you did calibrate your monitor when you changed cards, right?

I'm sure they will since there's only one 7 series card on the market now. However, at the same time there was not a series refresh for the 6 series (unless you count the change to PCIe). I don't know if it will be a series refresh as much as a release of additional models.

Yes, I'll give anyone the fact that the ati's aa was superior to the 6x00 series, but from the images I've looked at the 7800s new modes are equal if not better.

Yeah I read that, it's interesting.. very small performance loss.

lithium726: Yes, I did.

It's funny how just because I prefer the image quality over nVidia and I own an nVidia card that so many people go out of their way to prove me wrong... oh wait... *Walks back to the AMD Processor thread* Yes, no more flaming.

It doesn't really matter what you own or what you prefer. AA quality is something you can measure empirically. It either works right or doesn't work right.

Where do you see this difference in image quality? Maybe you had the gamma/brightness set different on the ATI card and thus things looked DIFFERENT, but not necessarily better/worse.

god damnit.. topics always go way off-topic when some idiot throws in some flamebait response

Text just looked more crisp on the ATi card, yes I use ClearType, yes I used drivercleaner, yes I know what I am doing.

Anyways, back on topic and stop whining about my posts.

I bet ATi has a killer in their back pocket when it is released.

Warrior: Stop posting flamebait then.

ATI has delayed the R520 as the design was not giving good enough yields. So they are trying to AVOID an x800XT PE situation here at all costs. They are making a card that is actually worthy of being called a next generation card, unlike the gouged $600 7800GTX. And 3 months of giving Nvidia the high end is nothing to them, they are sitting on a cash horde of 600 million dollars

Yes, somebody smart.
I am not impressed with the 7800GTX passed the very small performance loss with Anti Aliasing.

And goes off even further when someone cant except someone elses opinon and thus calls them names like a 5 year old, please step back and think about that for a second.

Now:

Not surprised, they are having yield problems this has been known for a good while. They are trying to do a non paper launch and gain back some respect, its a smart thing IMO. Its not hurting ATi that badly to not launch it as soon as possible. From a business aspect they want to get the product out, have it be freaking great and have great yields so people can buy it. Its a very smart idea, and both companies are wanting to do it from now on. Nvidia showed us this with the launch of the 7800GTX, both companies want this to happen and you as a consumer should to.

I very much believe the R520 core is going to be amazing. I also think it'll have 32 pipelines and be much faster than even the 7800GTX. I also believe Nvidia will counter with a card that is fairly equel, most likely a 7800GTX core with 32 pixel pipelines and 24 ROPs. I think when the R520 comes out we'll see why ATi has been working on it for so long. I also believe it'll bring a lot more to the tabel than just the normal speed and 3D image quality updates. I believe the R520 will carry a host of decoding, and encoding benefits to the users out there who like HD stuff.

Sooooooooo, lets wait, and in the mean time lets enjoy the fact that Nvida released a card without a pure paper launch and lets just hope ATi does the same, because at the end of the day this is better for us all and competition is what makes industry evolve and become better.

*breathes again*

Umm...corporations are not infallible, ati is no exception. "Cash horde of 600 million dollars?" I think you have a very narrow concept of how a company is run. They can't go to the bank tomorrow and withdrawl 600 million dollars. And they don't have infinite funds to fund R&D. Whether you like the 7800gtx or not, it's out there, and people are taking notice. While ati is having problems with yields, they're losing profits and customers. Simple as that.

And honestly, gouged $600? The x850xt pe isn't much below that, and offers none of the next gen features that the 7800gtx has, plus it's slower.

And why no one saw these delays and yield problems coming is beyond me. Look at all they're trying to implement in one generational jump. Nvidia is taking the gradual approach, which appears to have been the better of the two.

well ill wait for the R520, since i have a 6800 GT , I dont see 7800 GT that big of a deal...
I will be going back to Ati.. so theres like 500 more dollars for them lmao

This is just sad.

The OEM version of the x850xtpe pci-e is going for almost $500 right now. If you're seriously in the market for a high end card...I think SLi, SM3, HDR, Transparency AA, and just plain more speed more than justify the price difference.

And don't bother to mention CrossFire...it's vaporware.

I'm not saying I wouldn't rather pay $300 for a GTX, but from a marketing perspective, it's not like they've lost their minds here...the pricing makes perfect sense....though $500 seems like it would have been more reasonable.

And a card worthy of being called a next generation card? Compared to the x800's, the 6800s were "next-generation"...so that makes the 7800s TWO generations ahead...
