R520 core pics

You call it snoozing, I call it just not being able to get their shit together!

Oh, and there isn't any hostility here, just opinions based on the topic of the thread.

Actually, I disagree that they dont have their shit together.

From what I've read this new core will be the basis of technology for years to come, somewhat of a 9700pro all over again (9700 core was the basis of everything up to X850XTPE, of course highly modified tehcnology though). To make new cards all they have to do is modify the core and work for years on the same core makign it better and better.

Imagine if this new core is so amazing that for the next 4 years all the cores are made off of it. If this is what ATI is doing, and I think it is, I dont blame them nor disagree with them that they should take their time in making it.

i doubt this core will be the future for ati....If the rumors are true ati has had way to much trouble with this gpu

You disagree that they don't have their shit together? Well, if they had their shit together, they wouldn't be snoozing? Yup. pwned.

I never said they were snoozing noob. I said some people think they are and that's why they are being hostile.

Reading comprehension is your friend.

this is an xbox 360
the R500 is the larger chip closer to the camera.
why is it larger than that triplecore powerpc processor

Its suppost to have 48 shader pipelines and E-Dram, those sort of thing tend to make cores pretty big, im guessing it a 90nm core too.

As for the R520 core pics, i think they are interesting to see, even if its not a real card. Assuming those pics are real, and that is a real R520 built on 90nm, then for one that core seems to be way to big to be a 16 pipeline core, so this could dispell the whole 16pipe 700MHz stuff that been flying about lately. Judging from the size, i'd say its probabaly atleast 24pipe core, maybe even a 32pipe core, but it will be impossible to know for sure untill we hear something more offical. But hell, speculating is half the fun ;)

As for the person that asked what D0 meant, D0 *probabaly* means theres been 4 major(?) revisions of the core, A, B, C and D, D0 being the first revision of the D core. This isnt exactly a good thing cost wise, as it must be expensive to change it so much, without releasing anything. It would also point to possible 'design' problem, such as those we've been hearing so much about lately.

Well, adding to the original topic (unlike some....:p), this is pretty interesting over on XS, they've been having a bit of a talk on the core picture as well, except they're using the coin in their pic to try and guess what's in there. So far it's looking quite interesting.

what i dont understand is that the r500 (xbox 360 gpu) is supposed to be faster than the r520 yet the entire xbox 360 is only gonna cost $300. Why cant ATi just release a desktop version of the r500 and make it uber cheap?....maybe microsuck has made a deal with ATi to hold off on the r520 so that people buy xbox360's instead of new video cards

lol, you're ignoring so many factors, it doesnt need its own PCB in the Xbox, and it doesnt need its own high speed dedicated GDDR3. Not having to worry about those two things cut down drastically on costs. While some people have been comparing the two, i still think its dumb. What the R5XX series will be required to do in a computer is not what the Xenos is going to be required to do in the console.

Can I first say well done for pulling of a very clever name change for 'Microsoft', you're obviously a natural when it comes to this sort of thing, did you invent 'M$' too?

More on topic. I imagine the Xenos chip will cost more than that, Microsft will simply be selling a loss. I also imagine it isn't as simple as you think to convert a specific graphic chip design and selling it for desktop computing.

EDIT*: Shifra said it better :D

um yeah like play games and stuff right? ...to create a pcb isnt that expensive and ddr3 would cost more but i still dont see how it could be more expensive than an entire console (especially one that is supposed to be faster)

no your right its not that easy but its possible...Since the xbox360 chips allready work and have been proven to work i think it only logical to ditch the r520 and make a desktop version of the r500 (even if it takes another 4 months or so to design a pcb)

consoles sell at a loss you know. The cost to build the Xbox360 base is around $370.

The PCB is more expensive then the core to manufacture and the GDDR3 on todays cards is the single most expensive component on the entire card. Manufacturing a core and putting it on the board that houses everything else, not as expensive.

And since you believe they are so simuliar, do you also think the Xenos setup then would work in a PC? Cause it wont. It has technologies specifically geared toward the console such as how it uses bandwhith as well as ment for use on TVs which operate at a very wide range of resolutions usually much larger then computer monitors of even years ago.

Apples to oranges. But then again, this is the internet and you must be right because you think you are.

im talking about just the core architecture not the entire gpu configuration

some of the things Xenos, infact many of the things it incooperates, are some of the major features of the R600 and things Vista will support/bring to PC platforms. But once again console GPUs and PC GPUs are different. Did you know that the filtering quality on the NV2a in the Xbox is still some of the best ever especially vs what they have done in the NV40/G70 and even vs ATI's offereings? They have different priorities in consoles. And now you're kinda dodging my points. If ATI were to make a "uber cheap" version, they'd still need to give it its own dedicated GDDR3/4 and PCB which increases the cost to produce miraculously as well as reworking the core.

Not to mention the yields on the Xenos havent been super either (big surprise). But thats microsofts problem.

Even visually you can see the differences the cores share, let alone what the differences are on each layer. The R600 will share much the same basic design of the R520.

How exactly do you "make" something cheaper?
no all im saying is that they could make a videocard as powerful as the xbox360 at approximately the same price if they focused on an r500 variant vs an r520...i think that if they cant produce a viable card in the next two months they need to ditch the r520 and focus on somthing new (like an r500 based card)

We dont even know what the r520 is yet..............

well its obviously different than the r500....and we have allready seen that running and its release is somewhat set in stone (xbox360 by christmas) so maybe they are having better luck with it

The r500 core specifications are owned by microshift. That is why.

The X850's die is the same size as the R520, the R520 incorporates a smaller manufacturing process. This translates into more transistors on one die and thus into more pipelines.
