R520 being used at E3

Wait is the R520 slower than the R500 in direct comparison or just because the 360 has 6 threads and 3, 3.2ghz procs? I thought it would be the other way around. Either way I cant wait for the G70 or R520, even if the Consoles have stolen so much of the spotlight.

Did you forget the fact that PC platform has SLI and will have ATI AFR/MVP in the near future. I think the glory of console gen graphics will be quickly overcome by PC stuff.
AMD already is already ready for Dual cores and has plans to release multicores by 2007. These are not just simple crunching proc's like in the xbox360 and PS3, they are full fledged CPU's with multiple FPU, INT units on them.

SWEET! I wonder if I can mix an 850 and an 800. No more SLI at the top of 3DMark. wOOt!
This woudl be because 800's (atleast mine) and 850's smoke the ultras. :D

Based on wich benchmark? :)
As far as I know NOTHING is know about the preformance of ATi's multiGPU? :)

Terra - Or did I miss something?

Why'd they run a an Intel CPU at that demonstration? Of course it was laggy. They should have used a FX-55.

perhaps the game is more video card dependent than CPU dependent, we don't know what resolution, AA and AF setting it was run at

can't wait to get this game, it sounds great

The R500 works in a manner so completely different from regular videocards, and is built so specifically for the Xbox360 that it really can't be compared in any meaningful way to the R520.

The GPU that I've got tapped out on the back of my hand will smoke them both.... :D

Seriously though, the more recent information for AMR is that there are two cards that will be used in AMR a Master and a Slave (play some Depeché in the background). The slave card can be an 800 or 850 card, but the Master will most likely be the next gen cards. Your two cards will then slow down to the lowest performing card in the combo, which should still be great in terms of what's out today, just that two R520's would be better.

If the information is accurate, you'll be able to use your existing PCI-E card but don't run out and purchase two of them, you'll need an R520 in the mix.

Gotcha, after I read that article on the Hard main page about the Xbox360.R500 it all made alot more sense. I am kinda Iffy about the whole controller card rumor going on about AMR. I was hoping that it wouldnt need it, but if the performance is good than all is well.

Lets see, an AMD X2 , dual G70's and dual PPU's I better start saving up

the xbox360 games that are being previewed at E3 are not actually running on a Xbox360... In the display cases there is a Xbox 360 but the games are being powered by Dual G5 w/ a X800 XT or 6800 ULTRA. These games are not showing there full potential because the AA is turned off, etc...

well it wouldnt really matter, since you would have HAD to buy a second card anyways, what diffrence does it make whether its a controller card or not?

Nice little tidbit of info, apperently there is a working R520 at E3, previewing Alan Wake (New next gen game, designed for the faster R500 GPU)

Seems hopeful, seeing as how they apperently have a fully working card there.

Seems the R520 was choking on that game...doesn't speak too highly...since it should have more than twice the fillrate of the xbox2...

G70 sure is a POS i tell ya what...

in related news, a company cannot show off a technology demo of a game without an Nvidia fan taking the words "not completely smooth" to mean something, must be a peice of shit!

Little did that fan know it was a technology demo of a massive world in which they zoomed in and out and also allowed a GTA like free roaming and driving experiance while showing off one of the most impressive real time weather, physics, and lighting effects seen in any game yet. God forbid the not nearly completed game have some hiccups.

ATI ...i have come to the conclusion your not yet announced product on this far from completed game, must suck. Good day!

Can we PLEASE not have these kind of comments in every one of these threads? You'll notice the Nvidia tech ones about the PS3 went along pretty smooth.

Alan Wake is a successful horror story author. His fiancée was his muse, according to Remedy reps, and she instilled in him both his inspiration and his nightmares. One day, Wake's fiancée goes missing, and as a result, he starts to crack--and stops sleeping. Yes, folks, Remedy's latest protagonist also has problems with women and badly needs a shrink. The difference between Alan and Max, though, is that Alan actually gets his shrink appointment. That's how he winds up in Pride Falls.

At the hospital, he meets an attendant who's a spitting image of his missing fiancée. And sure enough, the nightmares start up again. Only this time, they're a little too real. Is Alan going mad? Or is a sinister plot starting to unravel in Pride Falls? The game's psychological-thriller influence is exciting, since it hearkens back to arguably the best parts of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: the parts where those games got real weird and took some surprising and original twists. The Alan Wake demo was evocative of those sequences, and it left us with a real tease that found Alan desperately rushing to reach a lighthouse, where he tried to crack open the lock. But the sun sets. Alan then collapses, as if lost. The camera next pans back to reveal several standing black-robed figures, peering in his direction.

The freaks will come out at night in Alan Wake. According to the developers, darkness and light will be key aspects of gameplay. As Wake descends into madness--or into a world gone mad--the nights will seem to grow longer as the days grow shorter. And the nighttime is what will bring Wake's enemies upon him. We did get to see Wake running around with a flashlight and a gun, though we were led to believe that the light may end up doing most of the damage. Light will weaken or hurt Wake's enemies, and creatively taking advantage of any and all light sources within Alan Wake's grim world ought to be one of the interesting aspects of play.

Sounds a bit like secret window secret garden, or Silent Hill 2.

Except perhaps soundcards?

Don't forget you will also need dual 1gig Memory chips, dual SATA HD's and Dual monitors :p

Not to mention that the actual release of this game is going to be console only, so we are looking at a rudimentary PC port, which will not have any heavy optimizations; even then we've seen how well console-to-PC ports have performed. Halo anyone?

Me thinks we need to replace the dual SATA with dual 147 GB Fujitsu 15k SCSI drives, remember we dont want to cheat ourselves.

Wow, if an R520 can run THAT and stil get god FPs, it must be one hell of a chip

So, I went to the ATi booth today at E3 to take a look at the game. The graphics are simply amazing, and I'm sure they didn't turn the resoultion up, or AA on. Anyways, when the presentation was over, one of the guys asked 'So, what kind of hardware specs will the game need?' The Remedy guy said 'Top of the line' The guy replied 'So, meaning something out there today, or something that we'd need to buy in the future?' To which the Rememdy guy smiled and said 'Top of the line'. So, there's obviously something 'secret' which they can't tell us.

^^^I was at the Alan Wake demo today as well, both of the Finnish gentlemen presenting the game were very nice. I asked "is that R520 in those two PCs right there?" He replied "it's the next-gen Radeon" and winked at me. There were two R520s there, both operating in different PCs standing on top of eachother. It's a single slot card.

I was confused why they had two computers there. My guess would just be incase one crashed they had another 'fresh' system to go on. And yeah, it is a single card solution, and it's red (go figure).

You're right EQ, it was a backup. Human Head Games had 3 PCs just in case the Prey demo crashed on one.

.... I was confused until I broke your sig down FanATIc = Fan + ATI +c (rearranged cool ATI FAN, hmm?) But it looks like you've seen the light :D (just kidding).

But I get the gist of what you were saying, that the physics of the game (being a massive world and all) where causing the stuttering not the GPU. Kinda like we here about some 6800 Ultra or 850XT PE that occasionally encounter stuttering in HL2 when it's loading portions of the world, right?

I'm certain that they did turn up the res and "turn on" the AA. Look at the quality of those power lines, no jaggies!

If the R520 did all that and was very smooth I may also purchase one of these cards, unless of course nVIDIA's G70 is equivalent in droolage. Since I've invested in SLI motherboard tech, I'll stick with that provided I'm not left behind in features.

Guess time will tell, but the hype will get real thick before the cards are available for review by HardOCP and others. Once HardOCP has benched them both, the answers about "who's the current King of the shizz" will be answered.

There were jaggies in the game, and the textures weren't THAT amazing. What the Devs were showing was the lighting. EVERYTHING casts a unique shadow. As Xcellere said, the game focuses alot on light, so that's the main tech feature in the game. I mean, the graphics were amazing, but what got the 'wow' factor was the lighting.

Edit: My guess is that screen shots are one time renders for now. I don't think they game is up to running at Max quality quite yet as this is the first time the games even been showed to anyone.

Yeah, there were jaggies, but I'm sure R520 shouldn't have a problem running it with tons of AA and AF.

The coolest part of the presentation was when they triggered that landslide switch and all the logs fell down the hill. I was like

it was a tech demo, not a gameplay demo, anyone who didnt see it or read into it much doesnt know that. They were simply showing the amazing stuff they could do such as zooming completely in on the char then completely out on the whole entire town sort of like an RTS view. Of course its not going to be smooth, its as rough and as tough as the engine is going to get basically.

Anybody else see the irony of Microsoft using Apple hardware for their demo?
