I have done some research and it shows that the R51 from IBM has an 64mb shard mem vid card. However, a friend of mine has that laptop and he is trying to play AoE3 and when it starts up it is telling him that he only has an 8mb vid card. Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem?

Thanks

That laptop has integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2. Shared graphics memory size is dynamic, up to 96MB.

The problem may be with the minimum system requirements: http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/age3.aspx

"64 MB video card with support for hardware transformation and lighting required"

IEG2 does not have hardware T&L, it uses the CPU to emulate those functions. http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-011910.htm

or...

The problem may just be an incompatible driver. Try updating the driver first, if one is available from IBM/Lenovo.

Most laptops don't allow you to change the shared video memory size. That doesn't matter anyways on IEG/GMA laptops because the driver controls dynamic memory size.

Check the shared memory settings in bios.

if it's the 855gm chipset, nope, there are no options in the bios.

Yes, update the driver. the video driver that ibm's software installer (program that DL's all latest drivers/software) installs is not the most recent. i downloaded the most recent driver and it's a whole new UI in the graphics settings. definately go to intel's website and get the latest driver for the mobile 855 chipset.

As long as he didn't click "Don't show this dialog again", he should have been able to bypass an error message like this (but about the memory size):

Intel GMA900 @ 1280x800 is very playable on my laptop at this quality:

I'm using 6.14.10.4410 drivers, the latest from Dell.

My brother's R51 has the Mobility 9000. I would assume it is better than the GMA900...

His laptop has either has IEG2 with 64MB shared memory or a Mobility Radeon 9000 with 32MB of dedicated memory (on a 64-bit interface).

You said 64MB shared memory in the first post, which would be IEG2. Now you say he has the 9000. If your last post is accurate, his laptop does not meet the minimum requirements for the game ("64 MB video card") and he's out of luck. In this case, GMA900 is better. :p

Wait, I said my brother's R51 had the 9000, not the OP ;)

What I find strange is that the 9000 in that R51 is passively cooled, not connected to the main heatsink body in any way... so it gets insanely hot at times.
