Looking online it sounds like the FSB is capped at 1600? You can't OC it past that?

It can only run on the X48 so it needs DDR3 ram too... isn't the point that having faster RAM =Faster FSB? You might as well just use DDR2...

The QX9650 sounds like a better deal.
 
I have never heard of a processor that caps the FSB. Where did you read this?

to boot, its an extreme edition, even if they did decide to cap FSB speeds, that chip wouldn't be the one to do it.

Intel will only honor the warranty of a QX9770 if it has been used in a motherboard with native fsb1600 support.

Memory support is up to whoever builds your board.

The FSB is not capped. As for the processor itself, it can run on X38 and 780i SLI chipset based boards. Though it won't run on all of them officially, it can be done. Remember the X48 chipset is just an X38 chipset rated to run 1600MHz FSB. Most of the X38 chipsets can do that anyway. Also X48 does in fact support DDR2. I have seen the X48 with DDR2 in action as I have had one on my test bench already. The QX9650 is the better deal as it will be compatible with a greater amount of motherboards and it should overclock to QX9770 speeds easily.

Also FSB overclocking isn't needed for Extreme Edition CPUs. All you need to do to overclock them is to adjust the multiplier upwards.
 
This page seemed kinda confusing. Saying it supports FSB's to 1600, at first it kinda sounds like a cap, rereading it hours later now it - I understand it now.

So what is the difference between the QX9770 and QX9650 - besides the fact that one comes with the bus already at 400 vs 333?

Here are the differences:

QX9650:
3.0GHz
1333MHz FSB
Default Multiplier=9x

QX9770:
3.2GHz
1600MHz FSB
Default Multiplier=8x

Other than the multiplier, FSB and stock clocks they are exactly the same thing.

Mmmmm X48 + DDR2. That's hopefully the land I shall be in very soon. Well, that or 790i + DDR2,if 790i ever comes out and/or doesnt suck.
