This is a noobish question, but I'd figured I'd ask anyway. I just got my new QX9650 in the mail and I just wanted to know if I need to do anything special before I install as far as updating Bios or anything like that. I'm currently running a E6850 dual core on a Asus P5K with 4 gigs of memory on XP 32bit. Basically, do I just remove my Zalman heatsink, remove old CPU, replace with new, add thermal paste, put heatsink back on, plug in and go? Simple as that? (like I said, this is probably a stupid question, but I just wanted to make sure) Thanks guys in advance.
 
double check your current bios supports qx9650. if thats not the case, update with e6850 still installed and yes thats basically how you replace/update cpus.

might require reseting bios/cmos but should be easy after that.
 
The P5K is designed to work with 333MHz FSB CPUs, so it should be a drop-in replacement. You don't have to change anything except for the CPU itself.
 
I was just browing on the Asus website and I read a little asterick on the PK5 page that states to upgrade to the latest Bios before upgrading to a 45nm CPU. There are a couple bios updates to this board since I had this computer built last august. I'm now thinking that I might have to update the Bios before installing the CPU. Generally speaking I don't like to mess with Bios updates unless absolutely necessary but in this case I think I might have to. What do you guys think?
 
If your current BIOS isn't the latest, update it. Avoid potential headache in finding out that your QX9650 wouldn't boot after replacing the E6850. A BIOS update is often a good thing anyway. Just remember to take a note of any custom setting you may need.
 
BIOS updates are completely painless with newer motherboards, so if the site says you should update it, then just update it.
 
just dont use windows update when flashing bios, try from flopppy or usb stick.
 
When I flash the bios can I copy the newer bios onto a CD ROM and just use the EZ Flash utility built in to the CMOS? Anyone else here Flash their BIOS on ASUS boards?

I updated my P5KC with no issues. Copying the file onto a CD should be Ok - I also think that EZ Flash will allow you to put the file on a flash stick. In my case I put the file on my second hard drive which is FAT32 and just pointed EZ to the correct folder.

EZ doesn't support NTFS - according to the manual - so as long as you avoid that you should be fine.
