I've overclocked this to 3.47ghz and the idle temp is 45c. When i run OCCT stress test, core 1 and core 2 goes up to 74c !!! I want to overclock it more as stock clock of QX6800 is only 2.93ghz. I currently use Thermalright Ultima 90, with this generic thermalpaste, 1500rpm, everything unlapped. If i get the Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120, Arctic silver 5 or equivalent, lap both heatsink and cpu, will it make much difference? Im talking about £50 for new heatsink, thermalpaste, sandpaper etc which is about $75 in US. How much degrees will you reckon i'de drop? I've got an Antec 300 case which has adequate airflow.
 
yeah it will make a different.. but 74C with OCCT isnt bad at all..
 
i wouldn't lap your cpu, that'd void your warranty and also makes selling it that much harder... you should try the as5 first. maybe it's mounted poorly. the difference between a good and bad mounting is 5-7 degrees C.
 
Get a 120x38mm fan for the ultima90. It dropped more than 5C off mine. There's a lot of resistance because of how tightly spaced the fins are on the ultima90 (I have the same heatsink)

Under full load, my Q6600 @ 3.6GHz cores are between 55-65C

AS5 is fine, but it's got a curing time. I'm using Arctic Cooling MX2 paste, it's ready to go right away. And it's non-conductive.
 
Well, the cpu doesn't have warranty in the first place, all thats stopping me from lapping it now is the danger of me somehow breaking the cpu. I thought lapped cpu's make it sell easier because of the increased cooling performance? Logan321! Why is your overclock so cool!? at 3.6ghz my temps go up to 80c, and i think the cpu starts thermal throttling? And i see a massive vdroop, and that annoying duck sound in OCCT that means ERROR.
 
Lapping won't make it harder to sell. I've sold tons of lapped CPU's with no problem.

As for temps I run my Q6600 with dual medium speed yates on a Xigmatek S1283. It never breaks mids 60's under load depending on the ambient temp.

I'd say get some better compound, like MX2 or AS5 and go from there. A new fan couldn't hurt either.
 
I've never had a problem either selling lapped cpu's, if anything they were more desirable.
The bigger heatsink and paste should get your temps down some. Lap the cpu and heatsink and get them perfectly flat and polished. Nice even cote of AS5, but not too much. I would think with everything set and mounted right you should max out at 65C. I'm running at 3.4 on a q6600 and never get past 60C.
