QX6700 vs 'Native' Quad core

Hi

I'm contemplating buying a new PC with the QX6700 processor. The one concern i have is the higher power consumption this chip has relative to other Core 2 Duo's. I understand Intel are planning to release a 'native' quad core chip based on the 45 nm process perhaps by end of 2007. These designs will be more power efficient than the QX6700. Would such a chip be compatible with current LGA775 socket motherboards ? Is it worth holding out for the release of native quad core in preference to the QX6700 or should i just bite the bullet and get a QX6700 ? What other advantages will a 'proper' quad core chip likely to have over the QX6700 ? I could opt for a cheap Core 2 Duo chip now and upgrade to a (power efficient) quad core in a years time, but don't know if such chips will be motherboard compatible.

thanks

QX6700 has a 120w TDP.Q6600 has a 80w TDP.

6 months from now AMD will launch its K8L series and 9 months from now Intel will release its 45nm generation of chips.New mobos and memory ( for Intel DDR3 ) will arrive with them.

Is it worth waiting ? No.If you have the money why not enjoy simply the best you can have right now and another half year ( probably more).AMD looks to have some problems with K8L , from 2.7-2.9GHz@120w rumour has it is down to 2.3-2.5GHz@120w.

It is unclear wether K8L will have better performance clock/clock vs. Core products.Word has it 15% better than K8 which is a little shy of the 15-20% advantage Conroe has.OTOH you can always OC the QX6700 , it is known as a terrific OC ( 3.33GHz is the norm ).

Playing the waiting game on the top end is a bit silly. There are always better products in the pipeline.Irony : if you can wait until winter 07 , why not wait till summer 08 for the Nehalem generation that will replace Conroe ? It has IMC and CSI ;) /Irony

QFT. But I try to buy when technology has a "bigger" leap than usual..
Your rig is [H] by the way ;) :)

Well I think the leap from dualcore to quadcore is greater than any improvements on quadcores in the coming months/years.

Well , in 18 months will have a brand new spanking toy to play with : a next generation architecture CPU ( Nehalem ) coupled with IMC and CSI , a 1st for Intel.

Considering the technical prowess of Intel chipset/MC designers I'm expecting great things from Nehalem.

Well it has never been worth waiting as far as how many computers I have been building, it's like everyday I have to put something new together.

To me it's more like, "take this one now, or wait a lil' for the one coming up...". And, if you do wait it will be like this, "take this one now, or wait a lil' for the one coming up...". Same-ol' same-ol'. And, if you do take the one now, it's like, "Crap ! I should've waited."

I'd say buy something that you know you will be satisfied and you know it returns the service for the money well spent on ;)

Cheers !

I would prefer the native quads though...

As I have never bought anything that's first generation from Intel, lesson well learned !

Thanks for the responses. As i said, my only concern with the QX6700 is the higher TDP rating - don't know if that would put other people off, or whether it's even a big deal or not....

TDP is misleading.Performance/watt is what matters.

In that area QX6700 really shines and is head and shoulders over the competition.

while i normally agree with that, i was going to drop a lot of money on a pc Q3 06, held out till end of the year for C2 and 8800's... greatest decision ever

;)

I agree with the there is always going to be something newer and better.....but I also agree with the sometimes there are bigger jumps idea.

P4 sat for a few years with no HUGE improvements...then came C2D, a huge jump that is totally worth the upgrade (thus I upgraded).

I would say though, wait a few weeks longer to see if there are any price drops on the Q stuff, and if not, just get it. Its amazing stuff and should last quite a while as it is amazingly fast!

I would say though, wait a few weeks longer to see if there are any price drops on the Q stuff,

The next round of price cuts is scheduled for Q2 according to the info from Intel that's been going around the news websites. That means you could be waiting anywhere from April to end of June. It will correspond with the release of a few new processor variants.

But not at the top.QX6700 will retain its price until it will be replaced in Q4.
