Quitting due to noise pollution

As some of you may know, all my computers share the single room I have, which thus also is my office and bedroom. With the F@H clients pegging the CPUs and GPUs of some of these systems to 100% their cooling solutions get quite noisy.

The GTX275 in my main system has a very pronounced hum at the 50-60% or so it runs at during load. I have learned to live with this noise.

The new Q6600/9800GX2 system I put together a short while ago has a significant air flow noise. I learned to live with this. Now one more 80 mm exhaust fan in it is giving out and will have to be swapped out. The case is also rattling for some unknown reason. This I can't live with.

I'd so much like to shut down all the F@H clients and regain the silence in this room I had before as especially now with many stressful things going on in my personal life it's hard to find any peace at all. I don't want to mess around with old hardware any more and worrying about what is going to break or start making noises next.

For this reason I have shut down the Q6600 system and won't be restarting it in its current configuration. As I lack the funds to buy new hardware and there won't be any change in this in the foreseeable future this may not be until much later this year. I'm leaving the two clients on my main system running for now as their contribution to the noise pollution is relatively mild in comparison, but this will drop my F@H output from 25k back to around 9k PPD.

F@H is useful, but it shouldn't cost me my sanity. I hope you guys understand.

Sorry to read about this but I understand. The area where most of my systems are located sounds like a server room to most people, but it doesn't bother me that much because I have a hearing 'deficit', LOL. In any event, I hope you'll return full force down the road when you are able.

I totally understand about the noise from some systems.

Make sure before you stop folding on those systems you run the client with the -oneunit flag so it will finish your current unit and will shut down after it completes.

Hope things work out for you in the long run and you can rejoin us.

lol if that drives you nuts.. then you would probably shoot yourself if you were in my room.. 2 cases both running tri-cool fans on high.. cant even hear my GTX 260 @ 71% fan speed.. let alone my loud cpu heatsinks over the tri-cool fans.. but im use to it.. actually makes me more insane when i cant hear them not to mention the fact that i cant even fall asleep without listening to the fans.. guess thats what happens when you listen to the same sounds for 2 1/2 years..

Well, atleast your not all the way gone, glad to see your still somewhat active. Stop in still. Love to have you on forums
Hell sound was another reason big high xepebrirty

All anyone can do is whatever they can afford to do, be that cost in dollars and/or sanity. It's good to see you'll still be able to keep some production going on the project in any case.

Noise I learned to filter out in the Navy, that came from listening to the ship's sonar pinging and people running up and down the metal ladders in the berthing. I could never sleep through the gun firing though. ;)

I can totally sympathise with this. My machine runs next to my bed too and I can just about put up with the noise.

Sorry to hear that but I fully understand. My PC is in the living room and can be annoying at times. It's not as bad as it's been after after modding my GTX 275 video cards to get them quieter but the family still complains at times from the noise from the CPU fan or something else in the case. I just tell them to turn up the volume on the TV. :D

Hope to see you back up to full production when the situation presents itself.

We udnerstand, its not like your leaving the community, just slowing down the efforts. And sanity is no good cost for anything.

We all understand, and have your back! :)

I understand.

I lost my sanity a long time ago. I cant even think of buying a computer part without thinking what affect it will have on F@H, how many PPD it will get, what will my PPD/watt be after this, etc.

Sorry to hear about the loss in production but glad that you wont be going completely insane. After all, cookies made by an insane person are usually just a little bit overcooked, and we cant have that now can we? ;)

You don't like the soft whisper of case fans?

I can't go to sleep without the system running. It's going to be interesting when they get moved to the basement.

She'll be back. They always are.

Fixed that for you. :)

Sorry to hear that you're downsizing.
Since you won't be running the h/w anymore, please consider passing it along to a fellow folder who will run it (even if it's noisy). ;) [not saying me...just offering the suggestion]

maybe you should look into watercooling down the line.
when funds permit.

its a shame to lose a fellow folder but you have to do what you must to keep yourself from going nucking futz

Understandable.

That's why I moved my systems to the basement at work (with their permission). It's really cold down there too, great for overclocking and keeping things stable

I would be interested in buying the system off of you though. I'll even fold under your name for a month or so while you figure out a new game plan. =)

Watercooling would fix the issue 100% (with a big rad with some slow-moving 120 mm fans :D ), but at this point an Antec 200/300 case or so with proper airflow/cooling (and no 10-year old 80 mm fans) and perhaps a more beefy HSF for the Q6600 would fix it already.

Unfortunately it'd be financially irresponsible for me to spend more than perhaps 25-30 Euro or so on new hardware. Maybe someone could borrow me the cash? :p

well i am cooling my q6600 @ stock clocks with a scythe infinity that i picked up on the FS forums for 20usd shipped.

as for as gpu coolers ive always had good luck with anything from thermalright and Arctic cooling.

I'd definitely be willing to pick up a Vendetta cooler for $10 at MC and send it wherever, but I think you may be overseas (possibly Europe?)?

Yeah, I'm in the Netherlands :) Probably cheaper to paypal cash or buy it with CC at UK Amazon :p

Netherlands?

We dutch have to watch each other's backs. :D

Happy shopping for silent cooling.

Thanks :D

BTW, for people in the EU, direct bank transfer is preferred ;)

(saves me an additional step/charge :3 )

Okay, I settled on the Antec 300 case with an extra 120 mm fan. Now to decide on an HSF. A certain person keeps telling me to get the Corsair H5O ;)

Thank you guys for allowing me to keep folding along without having to endure all kinds of whooshing and rattling noises :)

Whoever they are, they're right. I was going to suggest it myself.

I don't know about the 9800X2 but Arctic Cooling has a very nice cooler for the 275. From experience I can vouch that it is very quiet and cools great. Installation in a midtower might be a little tight so be sure to check the specs of the cooler before considering a purchase.

It's 55 Euro without VAT here, though :(

So far I got a boost in my budget by about 90 bucks, or about 60 Euro, which allowed me to get the Antec 300 and an additional 120 mm fan (cheapest decent one I could find :p )

Antec 300: 39.50
A-C F12: 4.20

Leaving me with 16.30 Euro plus my previous tiny budget of ~25. The Arctic-Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev.2 or similar would be the best I could do with that, I guess :p

was my old server before i moved to a CM stacker ST01

Yeah, I looked at that cooler before. It does need separate VRM cooling, though, as the included heatsink isn't sufficient. It's also another 60 Euro or so :p

BTW, nice system, mikey976, gives a good idea of how stuff would fit :)

The 300 is a great case. I've got my WHS stuffed into it. Keeps everything quite happy.

GTX260s are a very tight fit however.

Is a 9800GX2 longer or shorter than a GTX260?

Yes mom :p

I was looking at the Thermalright Ultra-120 and Noctua NH-U12P, actually. They seem quite competitive with the H50, are cheaper and according to the reviews I have read the Ultra-120 is a tad more silent as well. I also like the idea of not messing with the intake/exhaust setup of the case.

I have owned a True and an H50. I no longer have the true and am currently using the h50.

Get my drift ;)

I had a TRUE, now I have the H50, lol! :)

So that means people have a lot of spare TRUEs in people's closet? Any I can have? :D

There are better HSFs than a TRUE whether one looks at it from a price/performance aspect or overall performance. I believe even my Sunbeamtech CCF is rated better by many reviews and it was around half the cost.
