quieting down computer?

How can i make my computer quieter without having to do water cooling and stuff like that? Also i have no interest in replcing my video card heatsink :p

I have dual 120mm case fans with my sonata. (the one that came with it is fairly quiet while the other one is a bit louder). I have a zalman AlCu heatsink which is pretty quiet in itself.

Should i replace that 120mm fan or just unplug it?

my temps are about 55c under load for my cpu about about 70 for the video card
 
7 volt mod the fan and put a scrap piece of carpet against the wall behind the computer to do it cheap.

just make sure to run something else that draws of the 5Vrail elsewhere on the molex daisy chain coming from the PSU so you don't go below the minimum current requirement.

take a molex extension cable, cut the 5V live, and the 12V ground. cross them and solder or marette them together. if you used solder, then cover the exposed bits of wire with electrical tape. plug the one end of the extension cable into the PSU molex, plug the other end into the fan that you would like to quiet down and NOTHING else. then make sure that you have somthing like an optical drive plugged in elsewhere on that string of molex connectors coming from the PSU.

is that clear enough? i can try to explain further, if you like.

there are plenty of people who do these, but most of them mod thefan directly. i prefer to mod a $1 molext extention, rather than the $20 fan itself, though.

some people say that 7V mods are hard on the PSU, but they're fine if you make sure to have something else drawing of the 5V.
 
there's no reason to cut the wire.

if you take a small screw driver, the pins in the molex connector pop out, and you can swap wires around at will. just be careful that you don't wire something up that crosses any voltage lines if it's a pass-through plug.
 
i've tried that too. i find that the flanges that are supposed to hold the pins in place within the molex block get so bent out of shape that the pins no longer stay where they should, and no longer make reliable contact with the female ends.

either way he does it, the effect is the same, though.
 
If you can afford ~$35, replace both 120mm fans with "Nexus" 120mm fans.
They are by far the quietest 12v DC fan out there.

I assume you are running your 7000Alcu with the fanmate turned down a bit already?
 
7 volt the current fans, or put in quieter fans, but you'd be suprised at how big a difference the carpet on the wall makes either way.

a lot of the noise from the computer has to hit the wall and bounce back for you to hear it. muffle the surface that it is bouncing off of, and you quiet things down substantially.

i really think that you are targeting the wrong noise, since i find the high pitched whine of a GPU cooler to be far more annoying than the lower frequency hum of 120mm fans, but the carpet will help with both.
 
are u using the power supply that came with the case?? if so juss plug the 120mm rear fan into the "fan only" connector

Before sticking a waterblock on my 6800GT, the stock fan on it really wasn't that bad.
It isn't one of those 40mm fan type whines, imo. Not that bad honestly. Nothing that would compete with a 7000b at ~9v maybe.
That was when the card was sitting idle though... :)

Nexus 120mm fans are always a good investment, even if you don't *NEED* them :)

actually, my 6800 has a deep and hardly-noticeable growl. i know what sound you're talking about though, my geforce3 had that high pitched whine :)

if it's at all like the antec trueblue 480 in my sister's machine, then it's a psu daisychain with "fan only" printed on the two molex connectors.

it only has the two wires on it: yellow and black.

it varies the voltage according to the internal temp of the PSU.
 
i dug around inside my computer for a bit.

i disconnected my slot cooler (i originally had it below my video card, but i think it was counteracting my GPU fan)... and disconnected the front 120mm fan (the antec sonata case has it in a very weird and useless place). Its much quiter now, but i'll see how the temps hold up.

it also seems the loudest thing is the northbridge fan on my Abit is7-g
 
Watch out for high hard drive temps.

The SPCR folks don't think the 380S included with the Sonata is too terribly quiet. If you don't mind losing warranty, you could try replacing the fan.

 
you mean on the power supply? yeah it makes a bit of noise :p

oh, yeah, yuck..

Pick up a zalman passive nb cooler. They are only $5.
jab-tech.com is my favorite for small parts, they have cheap shipping.

If the NB cooler bumps into your 7000b Alcu, you can bend or cut the pin fins on the NB cooler. That's what I did on my K8N Neo2. It never even gets warm with about 1/4 of it's pins missing.. hehe

2nd of all, don't expect silence if you are not creative... or shall we say, ghetto.
 
i did some ghetto things like shut down a couple fans that werent doing much. all my temps are the same with them disabled. now all i hear is the annoying growl of the northbridge fan and the whoosing of the power supply fan. i dont mind spending a little money either. as they teach us in engineering... you can't get something for nothing. i bet like most of us, i love getting little toys in the main to use with my computer :)

and shutting down fans? dude thats nothing. i have my comp's side open with NO case fans whatsoever. all it has is a 7v'ed cpu fan and a modded psu with 2 7v fans.
