I have an old GeForce II card in my linux box and the fan is LOUD. Without purchasing a new heatsink/fan for it, what can I do to quiet it down? Can I undervolt the fan? If so, how?

Thanks.

5V, I'm not sure if that will provde sufficient cooling for the video card. I mean, it may, I'm just not sure. A diode in series with the fan should drop about .7V, so a few of those and you have a few volts dropped prior to the fan. That should slow it down some.

You could get that thing on a fan controller. That is an adjustable method.

You could also try and mod a heatsink onto the card. It could be a heatsink from an old build (socket A for instance), or the stock heatsink that came with your processor that you aren't using. The possibilities, there are lots!

how hot can a geforce 2 even really get?

i had a never-ending house guest that was addicted to WoW but didn't have his own computer so he played on my wifes..... i couldn't bring myself to ask him to leave so one night i unplugged the fan on her little fx5200 and even o/c'ed it a little... couldn't get that sucker to die!

eventually he did get his own computer, but i never did plug that fan back in... it's so quiet without it and after a year plus with no issues, i'm convinced that the fan was pointless to begin with.

Yea, I'm not sure how hot a GeForce 2 can get (man those were the days). That said, I think there should be at least SOME airflow through the fins of the heatsink. Else you lose convection as one of your methods of cooling. I mean, it may work fine, but it may not. *shrugs* :p
