Quietest PC Possible

Right now I have a Lian-Li V1000 and it's very loud. I sleep in the same room as the computer, and find myself now turning it off not just at night but any time I don't need it on. My goal is to have the computer be as close to inaudible as possible. The problem is, when I switched from my Antec case to the V1000 my XP-120 will no longer fit on my Intel 925XE board. Back to the stock cooler I went. I also have a BFG 7800GT OC with the copper HSF (with blue leds) which is incredibly loud. I then have 6 Seagate Barricudas, a maxtor, and a hitatchi. The pata maxtor and hitachi will go eventually, and the noise on the seagates seems to be bearable. The two 120mm case fans arn't even the worst thing, but I know they could be better as well.

What I am looking for is the best heatsink (Scythe Ninja if it will fit), as long as it will clear the V1000 without modifications on an Intel 925 board. I have also been looking at the Nexus 120mm silent fans, and the Scythe 120mm S-FDB fans. The Scythe advertises 8db and the Nexus says 22. I just wanted an idea of what actual noise would be and which one is quieter. I am planning to replace the GFX cooler with an AC5 so that should be very quiet as I understand it. I have also thought about WCing or a V1100 but those will be later I suppose. Any suggestions for noise are appreciated.

Are you overclocking that much? If not then get the Artic Cooling freezer 7 it's not that tall of a heatsink although you might want to look at it just incase (they sell it at newegg.com) It's super quite and if you have the fan on half speed while your comp is doing whatever it does during the night it will still keep it cool enough (unless your converting tons of pr0n dvd's or something to xvid then you might have to keep it at full spin :). Anyway it's a quite and cool solution. Also look to see if you have a fan plug for your psu so you can try and maybe turn down your psu fan to keep it even quiter. I have my x2 system running near quite with a freezer 64 (a higher end cooler but still near the same as a freezer7) and all fans turned to half speed or less (actually cpu fan is at 900rpms and cpu stays at a cool 35c)

Go for the Nexus fans, they actually push air unlike some of those other silent fans. :p Nexus also doesn't lie about the dB ratings either.

i own a 120mm Nexus fan and i heard the Scythe 120mm fan (20 dba version) but not the 8db version. The 8db version seems pretty weak; if you're gonna spend that much money, might as well get some performance outta that fan. The Nexus fan is still quieter, but barely. The Scythe fan does push more air so either one of those would be fine. For a cheaper alternative, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro is great too, especially for the price. I just posted these links in another thread about quiet coolers:

Check this out:
http://www.shoppts.com/scniw12nesic.html (not bad for 48 bucks)

Or a cheaper alternative, Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro for 27 bucks:

For your video card another one to look at would be the Zalman VF700cu. you should be able to control the fan with that cooler too.

NV silencer is very quiet for video cards.

and you could try one one of the "passive" heatsinks with a low rpm fan attached.

You should also look into a fan controller, I have this one:

http://svc.com/bus-55-sl-24.html (silver)

Its really good, just the LEDs are bright, helps control all my fans. I swapped out all the fans on my Lian-Li PC-61 for 3 CM fans that run at 25DBA (and thats still loud) so I got this to turn them down.

If you want to spend a lil money and a little modding, why not watercool?

About the GPU if you don't get a nV Silencer, then check out the ZalmanVF-700CU, it doesn't exhaust air from the case, but its still pretty quiet.

Is there any way I can find out if the Scythe Ninja will fit in my case? There is only a tiny bit of space between the motherboard and the floor divider in the V1000 which is why my XP-120 will not fit. I would prefer the ninja because then I can just use the rear 120mm case fan to cool the processor.

I'm not really looking for fan busses or the like, I just want everything really quiet. My psu is a NeoPower that I am going to swap for a NeoHE so sound on both is fine. I think I am going to try a couple of the 8db Scythe fans. I honestly don't care about performance as long as everything stays at a decent temperature. I just want my computer to be DEAD silent.

if you want silent fans, get Yate-Loons, they are the same fans as the nexus (they are rebranded) and they are 1/3 of the price at jab-tech.com
