Hello everyone!
Sorry if this is repost (redirect info would be nice), but I am wondering if I can get some recommendation on the hard disk for my next system.

I am looking at 250GB hard disk around $150~180. I was originally planning for Hitachi since I liked the product description (low noise and low heat), but they are no longer available from newegg or anywhere =/

So these are my criterias (in the order of preference):
1) 250GB
2) 7200 or higher RPM
3) SATA
4) Quiet operation
5) Oh yeah.. fast ones would be nice :D

I would normally go with Maxtor or something similar. I don't think 10k RPM drives do too well in the noise department =/

Anyways, thanks for any info!
 
Samsung or Seagate would be the best choice for silence although the Hitachi drives are pretty quiet as well and offer better performance.
 
Holy the bastages at Monarch are selling it for over $215 when it was $140 in newegg :mad:
I guess I'll wait a few days and suck it up if I can't find anything similar or better :(
 
the new WD3200JB's are quiet, as are the seagate 7200.7(dead scilent) and 7200.8 series
also from WD anything with the PB suffix after it (like WD2500PB) or a SB Suffix will be quiet... they have the Fluid barrings system... and are uber quiet...
the 1 drive i dont recommend are those darn 36 gig raptors... ive got 2 of them in my machine and they just louden the whole thing up.... the 74's ive got arnt so loud... but the 36's can whine up a storm @ 10,000RPM.
 
I guess the Samsung Spinpoints are out because they top out at 160GB, but they are the spcr leaders for the moment. They'll come out with P120 line later, though, which has a max capacity of 250GB)

The next logical choice, though, would be the Seagate 7200.8 line, which is available already.
 
I think I will go with Seagate 7200.8 series. I want to try NCQ and the price was pretty smiliar to Hitachi.
