Hello all, i am making a HTPC computer and the case that i have right now has a main 120mm fan and its kind of loud for its use so i was hopeing to get an opinion of the quietest 120mm fan around? i am in the pricerange of under $20 (if its more than 20 than i can buy a fan controller). If i am forced to go with a fan controller for all of my fans what controller would you all recomend as a good solution to get super silent to full speed. Thanks for the help.
 
I've never used the SilenX but they seem to be really great fans. I've used the Panaflo low flow model and the Evercool model. The panaflo was louder than I expected. The Evercool was very loud. I traded the panaflo to a friend for the Evercool because I owed him some stuff, so I put the Evercool on a fan controller and it's quiet now.

If you voltage control or 5V/7V any fan I believe it would be acceptabley quiet. Or just buy a SilenX. :)
 
I would say pull the ground wire from the fan's molex and plug it into the red wire's spot on the molex connector - 7v = quiet
 
Evercool is better IMHO than panaflo or Papst on 120mm. Granted you lower the speed. Once you get below 8v, its matter of mechanical noise and both Papst and Panaflo have certain degree of it while evercool nearly doesn't. If you need more airflow thant 8v on these fans, Panaflo seems to edge out a bit...
 
I just got 2 Thermaltake Thunderblade 120's from Newegg for about $7 a piece. They advertised 78 cfm @ 21db. I found it hard to believe, but anything under 30db I'd be happy with...especially for $7.00.

Plugged the first one in and I couldn't hear it at all from about 2 feet away. I was very impressed. Second fan was a little louder though, but not much.

Loudest things in my case now are the PS and fan on the heatsink.
 
There's something with Panaflos that make them great resonators. Probably because they vibrate by a factor of most cases' natural frequency, creating constructive interference, and allowing the case to vibrate more and more. You absolutely have to use rubber washers on these. Or you could suspend it using strings ;). Quiet that way.
 
i forgot about the 7v mod, i will try that and see if its worth having done and if it isnt then i will go get some quieter ones prob spring for the silenX but i wish i knew the cfm on those because i might opt to replace all the fans in the htpc with them.... oh well, thanks for the great info people this is why people stayed after the [H] Reform hehe ;-)

The 7v mod works fucking awsome! sorry to be so crude but it really makes it the dream in quiet i wanted, and once you do it to one fan you just have to run the other fans off the same chain and it works flawless. If you need to quiet ur pc this is the 2nd step you should do (first being WD40 on ur ball bearings then after the volt mod maybe rubber mounts)!!!!
 
I sell Deltas. When you 7v mod them you cant here them for shit. I only charge 5.50, too ;)

12v, 5v is what molex carries... basically connecting 12 to 5v. Now, I don't recommend it for obvious reasons. Use rheobus if you can :)

change the wires..you have red and yellow. swap em
