Quickest BD-ROM for reading?

I wonder if anyone could recommend a BD-ROM drive that offers good read performance?

All the ones I can find seem to state 8x BD-ROM DL and 12x (or 8x) BD-ROM SL, but I somehow doubt that they are identical when it comes to real-world performance.

Is this for pure data extraction or are you thinking it will make movie ripping faster? For ripping, the drive (both optical and destination) are not the bottleneck.

Interesting. What would you say is the bottleneck in that case?
 
i doubt that. I would like to see proof of that and any decent program supports GPU decode/encoding
 
I normally rip the disc to the computer first, then encode it, which means I'd want the fastest optical drive.
 
The optical drive is definitely the bottleneck for ripping.

I think some posters are getting confused between ripping and encoding. Ripping just means reading the data from the optical disc. It requires very little CPU.

If you are going to encode it, then that will obviously take a lot of CPU. But the OP asked about "read performance", not encoding. The second post incorrectly stated that the optical drive is not the bottleneck for "ripping".

Anyway, if you are planning to encode, the usual procedure is to rip to the HDD and then encode from HDD. But a lot of people just rip the movie and keep it as-is. No need to encode if you have plenty of HDD space.

SomeGuy133: I did see that and a couple of other threads, but they all seem to be 2 or 3 years old. I wondered if there were any more modern, and perhaps better performing drives out there?
 
How about looking in the Optical drive sub-forum? This exact topic has been discussed ad-nauseum in there.

Seriously though, I did look but found nothing recent and no posts in the last month made me think that perhaps it was an archived forum.

I've run some baseline tests on the two drives I already have and found them to be almost identical.

I ISO'd a random selection from my blu-ray collection using AnyDVD 7.6.0.0 and ImgBurn 2.5.7.0 and found that they both gave 3.3x average and 4.6x peak speed. About right for my LG GGC-H20L FW1.03 (rated 6x/4.8x BD-ROM SL/DL read) but slow for my LG CH08LS10 FW2.0 (rated 8x/8x).

Last I checked it did around 8.6x read, it depends on the media though.
Edit: I could write at 12x though, that's weird.
 
Note that the 8x / 12x numbers are top speeds. Average speeds are always lower.

The actual speed for ripping blu-rays will vary as the read head moves from the inner to outer portions of the disc (and back from the outer to the inner for dual layer).

Was that peak or average? Was that with BD-ROM SL or DL?
 
Just checked the specs on the WH14NS40, and I guess the 8.6x was on a BD-ROM or BD-R SL, as it is rated at 12x peak on that media type. An 8.6x average read would be fairly consistent with my GGC-H20L results; average speed being around 70% of peak.

My CH08LS10 is still a bit of a mystery though.
 
Another vote for the WH14NS40 drive, which I was using until recently. Unfortunately, I needed to transition to slim drives in my VMWare hosts.. that WH14NS40 flew through DVDs and BluRays compared to my new BT30N slimline :(

Also.. I'll agree that saying "try the optical subforum" is... not that great. I guess I could update my thread (the latest one) to say that the the BT30N drive works well for ripping.. if not anywhere near the speed of my old 5-1/4 drive....

I've been doing some more digging and found that both my drives are "riplocked", which means that they are artificially speed-limited when encrypted media is put in. Closer inspection of the spec shows 4.8x peak for AACS media :(

Luckily, I've been able to undo this using something called MediaSpeedCodeEdit, and re-testing gives the following results:

CH08LS10: 6.03x (ave), 7.95x.(peak) - pretty much bang on spec for "normal" BD-ROM
GGC-H20L: 4.64x (ave), 5.86x (peak) - better than spec, which says 4.8x (peak) for "normal" BD-ROMs!
