QuickBooks Update Shreds Mac Files

Mac users beware! The latest update for Intuit's QuickBooks accounting software is apparently erasing important data and, for now, the only solution is to NOT install the update. Those of you that have installed it are hosed for the time being. Windows users are not affected.

If you did install the update, the company said, "our recommendation for now is to turn off your computer and do not use it further." Intuit is trying to figure out how to help customers recover the data they lost, but this sounds like this is quickly spiraling into a nightmare for Intuit technical-support employees and QuickBooks users who didn't have a backup of their files saved to Desktop.

Intuit has an update that more or less says:

"Don't reboot!!!"

they might be able to help some people recover the files IF they haven't rebooted.

I'm confused, they are saying to turn off the computer and not use it:

Are you thinking of the EVE update that deleted the boot.ini file from windows? There quote was to not reboot your computer.

Well, let's see.

Quickbook users AND Mac users = what, 5 whole people maybe this has effected? :)

Had this happened to me, I would have been really screwed. I store my QuickBooks file on my desktop! (Although right now, that is the *ONLY* file on my desktop, and I do have an up-to-date backup of it.)

Wow, then I know all 5. :-p

I just wish there were a decent alternative that could output QuickBooks-compatible files to send to the bookkeeper.

We have a mac at work running Quickbooks. Guess I better that user not to open quickbooks if they haven't in the past few days and if they have not to turn their machine on for awhile.

And to think they wanted to upgrade an office of people using quickbooks to macs this past fall. That would have really sucked.

I'm guessing they don't want you to use it because the erased files can possibly be recovered if no new data gets written to that sector of the hard drive (or something along those lines).

I guess this blows Mac's saying "It just works" to all shit LOL
I guess Intuit isn't Apple nor related to Apple LOL

This isn't actually surprising.

Yea, it just works is correct. That is until you take out out the box and start adding 3rd party software to make it do stuff :)

And crappy coders do work on both PCs and Macs, what is your point?

Guess I'm the only one here that read about Eve's update deleting boot.ini and killing many window installs?

The point he was trying to make is that yes this has nothing to do with Apple or Mac per se, but what it DOES do, has the potential for a hell of a lot of damage.

Whether it's Mac or PC is not the point. It's just a computer and is thus prone to stuff like this. A computer is a computer, despite what the zealots from either side of the fence say otherwise.

The war between Macs and PC's won't end here. But this just goes to show you, both sides are vulnerable and subject to bugs from 3rd parties.

Lol, exactly.

It doesn't matter how good something supposedly is, it's only as strong as it's weakest link and that is the software that runs on it. Whether it's OS X (the feline fleabag) or Windows or Linux or whatever.

Many? Last report only 215 reported to have suffered from the problem.

QFT. Nothing can kill an OS faster than crappy 3rd party software.

:D

Oh no... I play EvE... But what is SO Effing funny... It's just a boot.ini... FUCKING REBUILD IT... Good god....

Boot.ini is nothing compared to shredding accounting infromation..

Plus.. if your smart... YOU WOULD HAVE XP SP2 and or Vista... Only XP SP1 users where effected...

Plus it never effected me... /me Hugs his Vista Ultimate 64 :D

Anyone that willingly installs QuickBooks on their system deserves what they get! Haha, OK, I do realize that there aren't many "affordable" alternatives, but having dealt with QB in a business/deployment environment, I can safely form some negative options about the abortion of an application...

Quickbooks prompt you if you wish to update. Just say no. You don't need to keep Quickbooks closed for awhile. Just an FYI.
