Will the retail E8400 I'm buying off newegg come with some sort of glue to attach the fan to the CPU, or do I need to buy some separately?
 
If it says retail, then it comes with a stock mounted heatsink. It will just be plastic pushpins, and come with instruction on how to mount it.
 
So I don't need to buy thermal paste to mount a stock heatsink? Hmm...I thought they all needed mounting.
 
Thermal paste is never used to mount anything. It goes between the CPU and the heatsink to optimize heat transfer. Heatsinks are always mounted with pushpins, screws, or by clamping them directly to the socket.
 
There are some thermal transfer glues, but those are used for memory chips and genuine low power chips, not CPUs. ;)

Not to be confused with

adhesive n. a substance that unites or bonds surfaces together

It's not the stuff you used to eat in kindergarten.


The heatsink should come with a thin layer of TIM (thermal interface material) already on it, just sit it on the CPU.
