My old 8800GT was a trooper. Had it baking in a boiler of a computer, very often running at 90-95C, and sometimes going over 100C as I liked to keep the fan running at 30% due to no noise, causing it to go full-blast on the fan (emergency temp meassure).

As long as it's comfortable at the right side of 85, there is no way I'd spare it more thought - but that's me :)
 
You could always point a low speed fan on it, to help cool it down, if you feel the temps are too high.
 
GPU's run in the 70-80's all the time.

Though since this is running 24-7 you might want to try to keep it under 80C.

With the "Auto" fan setting on my card it only keeps things under 74C and the fan runs at about 40%. I can manually set the speed faster and it drops it in to the 60's under full GPU2 client load.
 
It jumped up to 75-76C while I was asleep and got very unhappy. GPU processing quit "Gromacs cannot continue futher" and it killed my SMP "Folding@home Core Shutdown EARLY_UNIT_END" - First time I've gotten a EUE.

The card has good airflow - a S-Flex F at the front of the case blowing directly on it. I think it is just the passive cooling + multi-hour running 75C+

I've actually used that exact same slot cooler with this card before and didn't see any temps difference. You have to run it underneath the card and it's sucking air, not blowing so not to effective.

I think I'm gonna grab an aftermarket cooler for this... The Vantec A6C (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835110015) looks like a good unit for this card running stock, and the ~1400 PPD is worth the $30. Pair that up with a little IC Diamond (totally love that stuff) and it should be good for 24x7 folding until the prices drop on the 9800gtx.

 
$30 cooler on a $60 card?

Thats $90, they have some 8800GTs going for cheaper than that with rebates, etc..

I think you'd be better off selling your card, you can probably get $40-50 for it, plus the $30 you were going to spend on a cooler and you'd have enough for an 8800GT, which puts out 5000 PPD and games almost as well as any of the 9800's.
 
There are actually people buying used 8600gt's? Never even occurred to me. I'll look into that before pulling the trigger on the cooler. Oh, and the card was $109 when I bought it :)

 
Yeah, I've pretty much decided on that... That leaves a couple other questions though...
1) Do you have to do SLI to do 2x GPU client?
2) Anyone know if the PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer can handle 2x8800gt?
3) Do I have to use Vista to do 2x GPU client?

Yes... I have the sickness bad... But for $170 (AR) I can double my PPD

 
You don't need sli for 2x gpu client. That psu will easily handle a pair of 8800GTs. You don't need vista, but it would drop your cpu load, freeing up more cpu for a smp client or whatever.
 
I just realized that I'm gonna have to rip all my boxen apart (again!) to get max PPD... sigh

Move the 2180 into my Antec 900 with a single 8800gt, move the Q6600 into the shuttle with the 8600gt, and drop 2x 8800gt into my daily (only one with 2x pci-e x16) box... oh and I have to put a new HS/F into my LL V350 cause the first two managed to both suck and piss me off.

Should be close to 20k ppd when it's all done though...

That reminds me, I should call the electric company and switch over to average billing.
