Quick question..

Sorry to start a thread about this, and I realize it's a bit off topic here but....

A while back, there was a brief discussion about a *nix firewall/av solution that several of you seemed very happy with, and I had meant to bookmark it, but I didn't get around to it. Well, I just picked up a second nic and I want to get this set up.... but I can't find the thread..

Can any of you guys help me out? I have researched several "monowall" type solutions, but the one that was discussed here looked to be far superior to the others.....

I downloaded untangle and burned to to CD, but I've not had an opportunity to load it up for evaluation yet. Any particulars I need to know prior to doing so? Configuration tips?

Another question... is it possible to fold on the machine while running Untangle at the same time? If so, how is that configured?

It's a UTM (Unified Threat Management) distribution, combining the usual firewall with IDS/IDP, web proxies and filtering, email AV/spam scanning, VPN support, etc. Others include Endian and ClarkConnect which i'm trying out atm.


Anyway, why is this in Distributed Computing?

Valid question and I have a great answer : Endian Firewall. I'm running a box with XP folding along with a VM running Endian Firewall (the boxen have 3 nics total, 1 for XP and 2 dedicated to the VM).

However, I will try Untangle to see if it is as good as Endian Firewall. Endian can be found at http://www.endian.it/

Smoothwall has never been hacked that I know of.
I put it on an OLD PII box that runs about ~25 watts.
Works with old or new hardware. 2 or 3 NICs. Dedicated firewall/router...

Pocatello, I will do it this week and will let you know if it work great. Endian have some issues with ports closed even if I specified it to be open so the only way is to let it run with all ports open, which is a security hazard. This is just so my ex-gf can use her webcam (myself, I don't have a problem at all, weird).

If Untangle works better, this will replace Endian for sure then i'll write a how-to since it's a bit tricky to work with 3 NICs in a VM.
