Hi, I feel like such a n00b asking this, but here goes:

It never mattered before, but is it an absolute rule that the res must be right before the pump? I'm trying to pack a lot of stuff in a small case, and it's just not working out for that. Can I have my rad and flow meter before the pump? The rad is a 240mm, pump is a d5, and flowmeter is a swissflow.

If it is just a flow meeter (depending on how restrictive it is) I don't think it will make that big of a difference. Not even a degree or two I bet if anything. If it is that small of a case, would will have some heat build up anyhow. So unless you are so worried to run the rig open 24-7 for airflow, don' worry. But that is just IMHO...
 
Most flowmeters are quite restrictive.... So it's actually GOOD to put them after your waterblocks.

However, about the res question... No you don't absolutuly HAVE to have your res before your pump. That's just a suggestion as, well... If you run that pump dry you will damage it.
