i have just inherited an old machine that contains the following budget PSU:

DYNAPOWER USA ADW-50063 ATX 500W
(output: +3.3V@32A; +5V@42A; +12V@20A; -5V@0.3A; -12V@0.8A; +5VSB@2A)

i have a 7900gs lying around, and my girlfriend has a sock754 rig that could use the graphics boost. will that cheapo power supply safely run that video card? (rig with 2 HDD, 2 DVD, modest OC)

If you enjoy the smell of magic blue smoke, by all means.

If not, drop the extra dough on something better. Try the Xclio Goodpower 500w for merely $50.

You've just saved yourself a load of trouble there.

Dynapower is on the list of PSU brands to avoid for high-end or overclocked systems:

PSU's to Avoid for High-End or OC'ed Systems

In addition, the 7900GS requires a PSU which has at least 24A on the +12V rail (or at least 24A combined +12V capacity if that PSU has multiple +12V rails). However, that Dynapower is (optimistically) rated for only 20A on its single +12V rail -- not enough for that graphics card.

It was 7800GS and he may have a s754 board with PCI-e but i doubt it.

To be clear, Im assuming it was a typo and was just poking fun.
 
thanks for the advice.

it's actually a 754 board with two pci-e slots (nforce 4). my girlfriend does graphics stuff for work sometimes and she convinced her boss that she would need an SLI rig at some point when they last chipped in for her computer. i think epox makes the board.

but i figure if i can get that 7900gs on there and OC the 1.8 ghz sempron to 2.2 or thereabouts...she'll have a solid system and won't need to go buy a second version of whatever she's got now.

will the $50 XClio PSU be able to handle the 7900GS and the OC'ed chip? what about a second 7900GS? (i see that it's SLI rated). if so, that's a helluva deal.
