ok so i got a corrupted winxp on my system right now (single seagate 7200.10 320gig) and my 2nd hd i jus ordered from newegg wont be here until a day or so.. and i need to reformat and install win xp asap since i need to do some school work... Im jus debating if I should reformat and install everything now so i can use it. Can i do that, then add the 2nd hd when it comes then configure it? Or would I have to have both hds in and then format/install windows xp?

what kind of raid? how many disks do you have? why not run each drive seperately instead?

well i was interested since this would be my first raid setup.. i am reading about them and I would like to consider raid 0 or raid 5.. dont know what is ment by how many disks.. but it is 2 seagate berracudas. 2 of these

ok to sum it up, i will install win xp on this 1 hdd that i have, i should have the 2nd hdd in a few days or so, can I just add that second hdd to my system and put both of them into maybe raid 5, without having to reinstall windows xp?

3 disk minimum for raid5

You can't add on to or modify a raid0 setup

ok ok i c.. ill try to wait til 2marrow i think my 2nd hd will come in... im posting via safe mode with networking..

but also i dunno, my motherboard gigabyte 965p s3 supports sata 3gb, so i cant debate wiether that is fast enough for me. but im jus curious to experience how fast raid 0 would be since im gonna be rocking 2 of the same harddrives.

depends on the controller/ software. There is both online raid-capacity extension (add more disks to exisiting array) and online raid level migraton (change raid levels, possibly using additional disks) on some controllers.

thanks for the info.. i have bare minimum on my system right now (i jus reformated on my 1 hdd).. vid and sound drivers, firefox, trilian and winamp so i can enjoy my mp3s.. should keep me entertained til this hd comes in.. (hopefully 2marrow)

i hope you know the limitations and headaches if a drive fails. make sure you make backups of your data so you don't lose your stuff. i would recommend running the drives as single disks. but then again, its not my data ;)
