Quick question on mic sound in vent

I use vent for playing mmorpgs and my setup is an X-Fi Forte and DT770's. Since there is no mic on the headphones, I use the zalman clip-on mic.

Everyone on vent can hear me fine, but they say there is a little bit of an echo. I decided to test out how I sounded using the vent setup, and it definitely sounds like it. I have the microphone boost turned on in my settings and the volume turned down (way too loud otherwise) and it definitely sounds a bit echoed. Then I turned off the mic boost and upped the sound on my mic all the way so I could be heard, but then it sounds like I am standing 5 feet away and in a bathroom.

These are the only two ways I know how to set up my mic... is that just the way it sounds? I would like to make it sound like I am talking normally like everyone else on vent. Maybe there are some settings on the forte or on my mic that I am missing.

Does it still sound echo-ey when you pick up the mic and put it close to your mouth and talk? Most headsets with boom mics place the mic closer to the mouth, whereas a clip-on one would on your shirt collar, etc, further away from your mouth.

If it doesn't sound echo-ey when closer to your mouth, that will be the likely cause. If it still does, then I have no clue :p

Yeah well I put the mic up closer to my mouth and it sounded fine without the mic boost and I didn't get that weird sound I was talking about. Problem with the clip on mic is that there is no possible way to get it close to my mouth without holding it there since it clips onto the wire of my headphones which isn't very close. Guess i'll stick with the mic boost being on. Sucks, though.

Duct tape + a firm bendable drinking straw. You'll look retarded but it's a hands free solution.
