Just wondering,
I have the EVGA 680i, what's the fastest processor I could put in there. I don't think the newer 45nm ones will work right? Currently I have a e6600, just wondering if I can put in a e8500 in it. Thanks.

The 45nm processors will work with a BIOS update. I got lucky and my E8400 worked out of the box in my MSI 680i.

As stated above by crazyjeeper.

If you want the 680i board to support 45nm CPU's you need a BIOS update.

The highest CPU that can go in the 680i board without a BIOS update is a Core 2 Extreme QX6850.

On my Evga 680i board i have a QX6700(Quad Core) CPU, and i dont plan to upgrade my BIOS to support the 45nm CPU's.

new boards ship with the bios update.

680i does not support yorkfield (45nm quad core) CPUs. You can have allendale (E4000s) conroe (E6000s), Kentsfield (Q6000s), and Wolfdale (E8000s), but no yorkfield (Q9000s)

How fast are you running your e6600? If you are running at 3.6ghz or simillar I wouldn't see the point in upgrading.

Some people argued this, but I tried it. My yorkfield did not function properly on the 680i.

OP- I would go with something like a Q6600 or a E8500/E8600 for pure gaming intents.

Theres no technical reason 680i cant support yorkfield. Its just Intel getting mad at Nvidia for not licencing SLI to X38 and X48.

I can all but gaurentee you theres a bios somewhere written by some engineer that has all the definitions 680i needs to run a yorkfield perfectly, but it never would have seen the light of day.
