Quick question about Netgear NAS.

so my firend got offered to buy this :

but i have no clue what to tell him. is it any good? how is the transfer speed? and how is there softwere?

and ofc what to expect?

The ad is in a foreign language; but I'm using a ReadyNAS duo like it, which I purchased a few years ago, having 500 GB twin hard drives. It's been perfect do far. My recommendation: 1. Update the firmware. That can take a little while. Then, forget about the 1 TB drive completely (use it somewhere else or sell it to someone who needs one). Buy 2 Seagate 2 TB drives. Put one in. Access the Raidar software, and let it set up the first disk. This will take A LONG TIME. Long as in 12 or more hours. So just start it going and forget it. Come back the next day, and install the second disk. Again, let it go. come back a day or so later and you have both drives installed. I never turn it off; it spins down the drives to save energy, and both of them stay cool. I'm using these:
Maybe you can get them cheaper on sale somewhere, but I buy from amazon because of their great return policy.
If you want to protect your data, you can hot swap a disk out and keep it off site, and the NAS will happily rebuild the raid copy in the background as you work, you'll never know it's doing it other than the little flashing lights on the display (and you can watch the progress in the raidar software if you want).
The downside: You can't just take out a disk and access it under windows should the NAS fail. There are ways to get into it via linux, if you know how to use it.

Speed, I'm on an older 10/100 ethernet system (also Netgear, FVS318) so I don't know how fast it would be with newer 10/100/1000 systems. But for streaming HD video, it works perfectly. It also has built in video streaming and torrent software in it's embedded OS.
Answer: I'd buy it again.
