Hi, im getting an X800 np but I cant decide which to get the 128 MB version or the 256 MB ...they are both identical except for the amount of mem the carry...

I am on a tight budget but if its really worth it i migth be able to squeeze every penny and get the 256 MB which is 50 bucks more expensive...

So my question is at what resolution does the extra 128 MB come into play??? where will i REALLY see a diference between one or the other... i plan to get and Samsung LCD 17" so my max res will be 1280x1024 ...

which one do you recommend...

If you can go 256MB. More and more games are starting to ultilize 256MB in video cards. 512 MB on the other hand is pointless to have.

Get 256. I got the 6800 when it first came out, and the 256 model was $150-$200 more expensive, so I went with the 128 model.

Yeah ... I know newer games are using more and more mem, but that depends mainly on the resolution you play at... Ive seen performance charts all over showing cards 200 dolars cheaper perform just as well as the more expensive ones, but at lower resolutions....

question is if im gonna play at a max res of 1280x1024 will i notice the performance change... I dont wanna post any FPS results or win any benchmarks, i just wanna play games smoothly...

50 bucks is quite a leap for me... i dont wanna take it on less it really worth it...

They are not performing the same since the lower end cards are running at lower resolutions. I would get the 256 since games coming out now are starting utilize 512.
128mb GFX card would get out dated fast.

get 256mb, u will need that much for Battlefield 2, Doom (4), Quake 4, Half-Life (3), Unreal 07, Far Cry (2), New MMORPG, New RTS, you name it, they need it.

If it's only $50 then go for it. I slapped myself crazy when I had just bought a 9800Pro and Doom 3 and HL2 were out. Sure it worked at 1280x1024, but no AA and there were many pauses. It's an overall better and smoother experience when you have more RAM. Considering you're doubling your onboard memory for $50, thats a steal.

It wouldnt have mattered with a 9800 Pro, card isnt fast enough in the first place to meet the levels of quality that would need 256MB of memory.

Anyway X800/6800nu and above needs 256MB, anything below that is to slow to really perform to the levels that need the more memory.

i would say if you are considering a 128 card think about the 6600GT. Sure there are cards with 128MB that are faster, but not by a lot. Though i agree with most that 256MB on an x800 or 6800 will last quite a bit longer.

Doom3 utilizes 512... thats what the problem is with GPU's Doom3 spills out onto the system emory and lags everything...so 512 for Doom3 is sweet

Its been shown that Doom 3 indeed does NOT need 512MB for any kind of improved performance. In fact, currently the only game to show a real improvment is Half Life 2, and that's only at the very max max settings, and even then its only about a 3% improvment.

512MB is a waste now for still a few years IMO. That's why the next GPUs will be still standardized at 256MB.

You're right about the 512 Mb needed for Doom3 but take care here : It is only in Ultra High settings when textures is not compressed. Just use the High option and it will use 256Mb without problems.

I have seen Half-Life 2 on a 6600 128MB with high res, details cranked, AA etc with no slowdown whatsoever (it was an A64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, MSI mainboard). The frame rate was exceptional, it did not slowdown one bit.

Although I do admit, get a 256MB card. You will notice the difference now and in the future.

And your point? You simply tell me a card can do that. No kidding, tell me something new. I'm saying, that the card couldnt handle a resolution or AA/AF settings that would need more memory. The card cant do 1280x1024 with max details and 4xAA with 16xAF, and only then would you need the extra memory.

Like I said, anything above a 6800nu/X800 will need the more memory, anything below will not.

I agree with this particular comment... and I guess now, even if I need to wait 2 weeks for my next paycheck, ill wait to get the 256 version... who knows...maybe by then, ill find a hot deal or prices will drop a bit and I could even go for the XL ...

Do anyone know if Connect3D is a good brand... ive heard of it , but i dont see it in may reviews so i dont know how poeple feel about it....my other alternative would be and MSI ...

So does anyone have one and can testify to its quality or have had any experience with one..???

Connect3D is just fine.

Skrying, I'm curious, have you actually used both a 9800Pro 128MB and a 256MB to vertify what you are saying? See I have, and the extra memory makes a BIG difference in smoothness. Granted that one might not see a great improvement using AA, but using higher detailed textures is a memory intensive task, and the stuttering ceased on my friends comp (and he only had 512MB of value RAM to my 1GB). The point here is always go with more memory because the card uses it.

You're unclear. So your friend noticed an improvment adding a 256MB 9800 Pro, or was it your 9800 Pro with 256MB + better computer was more smoother than his 128MB 9800 Pro and slower computer?

Yah he's got a 256MB 9800 Pro, 512MB Corsair value and a 3200+ clawhammer. At the time I only had 1024MB of kingmax at 2.5-3-3-8 200MHz. Granted if I had my ballistix then I probably wouldn't have had any stuttering. I'm just saying there was a noticable difference in smoothness *shrugs*
