Neighbor gave me a computer last night when she moved out.
After maintenance, i had to change stock cooler to another intel stock cooler from e8500.

I have speedfan on now.. and its on 60c ~ 70c(can't check on coretemp.. says unsupported cpu -_- )
is this normal for this particular cpu?
never had these type of cpu..
can anyone tell me from the experience? thanks.
 
The 90nm Prescott P4s ran hot. I don't know how accurately that temperature is being monitored, but it wouldn't surprise me tremendously. It should be perfectly safe to run the chip like that.
 
Intel's site says the P4 531 is rated up to 67.7oC. A little over shouldn't be too bad. Those chips know how to take a beating :p

These CPUs 5XX- 9XX have Very high power consumption , therefore they are hotter than newer models.

I would suggest that u will remove any of INTEL stock hsf and use one of the following brands :
TT
Zalman

Sounds wasteful to buy a new cooler for such an old chip...

It won't "melt itself down". That's silly. So your basicly saying that Intel released a chip prone to failure from normal operation? Runs hot, yes. Runs to hot for it to handle? No. That's a ridiculous assumption. Intel sold thousands of these chips that are still running around the world on the same crappy stock cooler they shipped with.

It's wasteful to spend money on cooling down a stock speed Prescott. It's going to run hot, it's meant to. If it starts shutting itself down from the heat, worry about it. If not, don't sweat it.
 
Is the HSF on the chip right now (from an E8500) better/worse/the same as the HSF for a 531? From what little I've been able to find online, the newer HSF looks smaller than the old one.

The newer C2D stock heatsinks are indeed smaller than the old P4 heatsinks. They should still be sufficient though.
